Alabama's Heflin to leave Senate

WASHINGTON - Another veteran Democratic senator, Alabama's Howell Heflin, announced Wednesday he will quit Congress in 1996, further dimming Democratic hopes of taking back the Senate in next year's election.

He is the sixth Democratic senator to switch parties or announce his retirement since the Republican landslide in November that gave the GOP control of the chamber.

Actor blames pusher for son's suicide

LOS ANGELES - Hours after the suicide of Carroll O'Connor's drug-addicted son, police Wednesday arrested a man the actor identified as his son's dealer.

Harry Thomas Perzigian, 39, of Los Angeles was booked for investigation of cocaine possession.

Shortly after 33-year-old Hugh Edward O'Connor killed himself Tuesday, Carroll O'Connor tearfully told reporters that Perzigian was his son's drug supplier.

``These dealers, they kill people,'' O'Connor said outside his son's home in Pacific Palisades. ``They make a living giving people the means to kill themselves. Harry, I want to see you someday.''

The 71-year-old actor had called police earlier Tuesday, saying his son was despondent and had access to guns. A crisis negotiator and special weapons team were dispatched to the son's home, but the younger O'Connor already was dead. Police ruled the shooting death a suicide.

M&M eaters pick new hue; blue

NEW YORK - M&M lovers will soon have the blues.

The results of a two-month campaign to choose a new color were unveiled Wednesday and blue won with 54 percent of the more than 10 million votes cast. It beat out pink and purple for the honor.

In honor of the announcement, made on the 86th floor of the Empire State Building, the landmark skyscraper was lighted all in blue Wednesday night.

The announcement came after a grueling campaign that featured appearances by actors dressed as pink, purple and blue M&M's at the Super Bowl and Mardi Gras.

This summer, the blue candies will replace tan in bags of plain M&M's. Blue will replace orange in almond and peanut butter M&M's, and it will be added to peanut M&M's without displacing a color.
