BABCOCK & WILCOX MANAGER NAMED TO BEDFORD COUNCIL

A Bedford native was appointed Tuesday night to the Bedford City Council.

Mary M. Flood, a human resources manager for Babcock & Wilcox Co. in Lynchburg, will fill the seat left vacant after the February death of Payton Otey.

Councilman Ronnie Rice said Flood, who beat five other applicants for the post, "came from a fine family and was highly recommended by the people in this community."

Flood graduated from Randolph-Macon Woman's College with degrees in business and math.

"She has outstanding credentials," Councilman Larry Brookshier said. "She was drafted on at a time when the council has a great deal to address."

Flood will serve until June 1998.
