Marine Lance Cpl. Michael Smitt, son of Michael L. Smith Sr. of Roanoke, recently was promoted to his present rank while serving with 4th Combat Engineer Battalion in Lynchburg. Smith is a 1993 graduate of William Fleming High School.

Marine Lance Cpl. Britt L. Stacey, son of Lee H. and Eulise M. Stacey of Vinton, recently received a Meritorious Mast for outstanding service while assigned at Camp Lejeune, N.C. Stacey is a 1989 graduate of William Byrd High School.
