Roanoker to run in Boston Marathon

Byron Yost, former Roanoke area president of First Union Bank of Virginia, recently qualified for the Boston Marathon while competing at the Shamrock Marathon at Virginia Beach. Yost finished the 26.1 mile race in three hours and 29 minutes and was in the top 20% of all runners, estimated at 1600.

Yost, who retired from First Union last December, is the founding director of Roanoke's First Union Festival Classic.

Youth basketball winners named

The Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department has announced the winning teams of the 1995 youth basketball championship games. They are:

Biddy Division - William Road Recreation Center, coached by Bill Adkins.

Peewee Division - Northwest, coached by Thomas Jones.

Peewee Power Division - Northwest Lynchmob, coached by Keith Haynes.

Little Division - Salvation Army, coached by George Harrison.

Little Power Division - YMCA Jets, coached by James Carpenter.

Junior Boys Division - Northwest Wolverines, coached by Ronald Anderson and Reggie Dungee.

Senior Boys Division - YMCA Running Rebels, coached by the Rev. Milton Hardy Sr., Dennis Hardy and Jermine Johnson.

Peewee Girls Division - ICAA Lady Hawks, coached by Paul Moyer.

Little Girls Division - Williamson Road Recreation Center Hornets, coached by Bill Austin.

Junior Girls Division - ICAA Lady Tarheels, coached by Carolyn Riles, Eugene Riles and Richard Riles.

Fleming needs golf tourney sponsors

The William Fleming High School football team is seeking sponsors for its first Colonel Classic Golf Tournament at Countryside Golf Course on July 7. RVBA teams win 2 tournaments

The Roanoke Valley Basketball Association recently announced the winning teams from the third annual Invitational Tournament.

The Roanoke Valley 11-under Jaguars defeated the Cave Spring 11-under team in the championship game to finish the tournament undefeated.

The Roanoke Valley 12-under Jaguars, defeated the 12-under Roanoke Metro Magic in the championship game to also finish undefeated.

Both teams participated at the Richmond Invitational Tournament. The Roanoke Valley 11-under Jaguars lost in the quarter finals in overtime. The 12-under Jaguars finished undefeated by beating the Richmond Gold in the championship game.
