Artist presentation

BLACKSBURG - Jhet Matous, a Christiansburg artist, will talk about "African and Sacred Influences" on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Blacksburg Police Station Community room.

Matous will talk about her fabric art and how her Jewish and African roots influence her hand-woven wall hangings and garments.

Charity campaign

Friday, April 28, is the deadline for charities to apply for 1995 Combined Virginia Campaign, the only statewide campaign for state employees to make donations through payroll deductions to charities.

A committee of state employees will review applications. Charities must provide at least one of a designated list of services to qualify.

Those services include health care delivery; health research; help for disabled people; relief to victims of natural disasters; relief to economically disadvantaged families who need care services or counseling; foster care and others. For more information, call (804) 371-8460.

White Cane days

BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg Host Lions Club has scheduled it semiannual White Cane solicitation for April 7-8.

Proceeds will go to the Old Dominion Eye Bank and other sight and hearing conservation projects and charities. The Lions club will also have eye-donor cards and will accept old eyeglasses for reprocessing.

Town cleanup

CHRISTIANSBURG - Christiansburg's Spring Cleanup is scheduled for April 10-21.

Special trash pickup by extra trucks will be available on regular pickup days. Loose materials, such as cold ashes, must be placed in a container that does not exceed 32 gallons. Loose leaves must be piled separately for the leaf vacuum, but residents should not block drainage ditches.

Tree limbs and trimmings must not be larger than four inches in diameter. During Spring Cleanup there will be no charge for pick-up of tree limbs or trimmings.

Recyclables can be taken to the town's collection points.

Real World Day

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech and New River Community College will conduct Real World Day, Thursday for students with disabilities.

A variety of activities are planned in the Commonwealth Ballroom of Squires Student Center from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Representatives from several educational institutions and support agencies will be on hand to provide students with information on the services and programs they provide.

Antique, quilt show

BLACKSBURG - The Blacksburg Junior Woman's Club's 27th annual Antique Sale and Quilt Show is set for April 7-9 at the Blacksburg Community Center.

Antique dealers from throughout Virginia and surrounding states will attend and bring furniture, jewelry, china, crystal, sterling, vintage clothing, tools and other items.

Last year's quilt show attracted more than 75 pieces. This year a queen-size, hand-pieced quilt will be raffled. Proceeds will benefit the Radford Soup Kitchen and Camp Easter Seal West in Craig County.

A full-service meal will be available as well as home-baked items. Admission Is $2 for adults and $1 for children.

The hours will be Friday, April 7, 5-9 p.m; Saturday, April 8, 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; and Sunday, 1-5 p.m.

Award for program

RADFORD - "More Than Just Friends: The Coming Out of Heidi Leiter," a television program about Radford University senior Heidi Leiter, has received an award from the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation for Outstanding Television Program for Young Adults. The production aired on HBO in March 1994. Leiter was the subject of articles in the Washington Post and Glamour magazine after she took her girlfriend to her high school prom in Manassas.
