AAUW book sale

BLACKSBURG - The annual American Association of University Women book sale, a tradition for more than 30 years, is set for April 20-22 at the old Sidneys in Gables Shopping Center.

Books will be collected at the old Sidneys on April 8 and April 15, from 10 a.m.-noon.

Proceeds from the sale will be used for scholarships and local projects.

Dog tags past due

PULASKI - 1994 dog tags have expired and 1995 tags are past due in Pulaski County.

Animal Control will be doing door-to-door tag checks in Fairlawn during the first weeks in April. Not having a valid tag could result in a court summons.

Tags can be obtained at the county treasurer's office or from any veterinarian.

Artist's influences

BLACKSBURG - Jhet Matous, a Christiansburg artist, will talk about ``African and Sacred Influences'' on Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Blacksburg Police Station Community room.

Matous will talk about her fabric art and how her Jewish and African roots influence her hand-woven wall hangings and garments.

Diversity speakers

RADFORD - Cornel West, a leading national voice on black American issues and a professor at Princeton University, will speak at Radford University Monday at 7:30 p.m. in Preston Auditorium.

West's lecture is the highlight of a series of events at the university on ``A Celebration of Diversity.'' The speech is free and open to the public.

Also speaking at Radford, on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. in Heth Hall's Commonwealth Ballroom, will be Melinda Paras, executive director of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force. Her speech is also free and open to the public.

Applicants sought

CHRISTIANSBURG - The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors seeks applicants for appointment to the New River Agency on Aging's board of directors.

Members make policy and fiscal management decisions for the agency, which helps older people to maintain maximum independence.

The appointee will fill an unexpired term through September 1995.

Applicants must be county residents registered to vote and in good tax standing.

Community foundation

RADFORD - The newly formed Community Foundation of the New River Valley has appointed officers and a board of directors.

The foundation was formed last year to help individuals, groups and corporations support local charitable interests.

Lindsay West of Blacksburg was elected president; Peggy Holden of Pulaski, vice president; Ruth Horton of Newport, secretary; and Donald Michelsen of Blacksburg, treasurer.

Board members include Ben Crawford, Stephen Gerus, Jim Johnson, David Murray, Margot Sebba, Robert Stuart, Stephen Wagner and Joel Williams, all of Blacksburg; Dr. Bill Dawson of Dublin; Helen Dickens of Radford; Janet Johnson of Pulaski; Darrel Martin of Newport; and Omar Ross of Floyd. Peggy Eaton of Radford is the foundation's executive director.

Loans available

CHRISTIANSBURG - Loans from the Farmers Home Administration are available for first-time home buyers who have modest incomes and no down payments.

The only costs are a credit report fee, typically $28 for individuals and $34 for couples; closing costs, such as attorney fees; and survey and appraisal fees.

Acreage reduction

CHRISTIANSBURG - Sign-ups are under way for the 1995 Acreage Reduction Program for corn.

To participate, farmers can plant 92.5 percent of their corn base, and a minimum level of crop insurance must be purchased.

Greenway input

BLACKSBURG - Blacksburg residents will get the chance to offer input into the greenway and bikeway sections of the town's comprehensive plan Monday, April 3, 7-9 p.m. in the community center on Patrick Henry Drive.

The meeting will allow residents to help define the Blacksburg Greenway System, which includes open spaces offering recreational, cultural and natural value.

'The Bald Soprano'

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's only play this year that will be entirely produced and performed by undergraduates is "The Bald Soprano" by Eugene Ionesco, Tuesday and Wednesday, April 4 and 5, at 8 p.m. in room 204 of the Performing Arts Building.

The 1949 play was one of the first absurdist productions. It parodies social relationships of the middle class.
