CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas - Grammy-winning singer Selena, 23, the Madonna to many Mexican-American teen-agers, was shot and killed Friday.
Her father said the suspect was once president of Selena's fan club.
Selena was shot in the early afternoon in a room at a Days Inn motel and died at Memorial Medical Center, Assistant Police Chief Ken Bung said.
Late Friday night, the suspect was still holding police at bay in the motel parking lot, sitting in a red pickup truck with a gun to her head, Bung said.
As lead singer for the band Selena y Los Dinos, Selena was one of the most popular figures in the genre of Tejano, a modern, urban version of the Tex-Mex accordion-based music called conjunto.

Citadel reassigns admissions director
CHARLESTON, S.C. - The admissions director who accepted a girl to the all-male Citadel was reassigned because of that case and two other incidents, The Post and Courier of Charleston reported Friday.
The newspaper quoted two unidentified board members as saying that Wallace West was sent to the alumni office because of the furor over Shannon Faulkner's admission, the recent indictment of a recruiter for falsifying travel expenses and another case in which a girl received a letter asking if she planned to attend a corps of cadets orientation weekend.
