UVA NIPS MD. IN LACROSSE

Third-ranked Virginia scored four consecutive goals in the fourth quarter to defeat No.2 Maryland 12-11 in an ACC men's lacrosse matchup Saturday in Charlottesville.

Tony Nugent and Doug Knight scored unassisted goals 12 seconds apart to tie the score at 10 for the Cavaliers (7-1 overall, 1-0 conference). Greg Traynor and David Jones capped the scoring with a goal each in the final three minutes to finish Maryland (6-1, 2-1).

In other sports in the region:

Roanoke sophomore Courtney Fitch set a meet record and qualified for the men's NCAA Division III track and field championships, clearing 6 feet, 101/4 inches in the high jump at the Christopher Newport Captains Classic in Newport News. Bryant Lee was first in the javelin with a throw of 169-11, and J.J. Maybury placed second in the 5,000-meter run (15 minutes, 24.0 seconds). In the women's competition, Jaime Leddy finished third in the 400 hurdles and set a Roanoke record with a time of 1:09.7.

Jeff Jones took a pass from Jason Davenport and scored with 43 seconds left to lift Roanoke over Washington (Md.) College 13-12 in a men's lacrosse game in Chestertown, Md. Roanoke (7-2), the third-ranked team in NCAA Division III, got four goals from Jones. Washington College (2-5) is ranked seventh.

Lisa Franzino scored six goals, including Roanoke's last two of regulation and the first two of overtime, to lead the Maroons to a 14-11 victory over visiting Mary Washington in women's lacrosse.

Cindy Kelley scored five goals to lead Colby College past Virginia Tech 13-7 in a women's lacrosse game in Blacksburg. The Hokies (1-3) were led by Alice Matos and Amy Mantooth, who scored three goals each. Colby is 2-2.

In Fayetteville, N.C., Chris Culbreth and Starsky Norman hit solo home runs as Methodist (14-12-1) topped Ferrum 5-2 in a Dixie Conference baseball game. The Panthers are 18-6. Norman's homer in the fourth broke a 2-2 tie.

Brian Ford (7-1) struck out 15 to pick up the complete-game victory for Methodist (14-12-1). Ferrum is 18-6.

Freshman Jeff Collins hit a two run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift Radford to a 5-3 victory over Winthrop in the first game of a Big South Conference baseball doubleheader in Radford. Winthrop won the second game 8-0.

The Highlanders (13-15, 3-2) also got solo homers from Kelly Dampeer and Duane Filchner. Dampeer, a former Northside standout, hit his 12th home run of the year in the first inning to tie the school record set by John Gilbert in 1989 and tied by Denny Van Pelt in 1994. Filchner hit the 25th homer of his career in the sixth inning, tying Van Pelt's career mark set from 1991-94.

Winthrop (21-10-2) won the second game 8-0 behind the pitching of Bryan Link, who tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven.

Virginia Tech's baseball team got complete-game pitching performances from Denny Wagner and Matt Lichtel to sweep a doubleheader from Howard 10-1 and 10-0 in Blacksburg.

All three of the Timesland athletes participating in the National High School Wrestling tournament at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh were eliminated from championship contention.

Patrick Henderson, a 145-pounder from William Byrd, defeated Luke Burton of Monmouth (Ill.) High School 16-15 in the first round before being pinned in 3:08 by Zack Yinger of Maryland in the second round. Henderson lost 3-2 to Casey Ashdown of Utah in a consolation match to finish his career with a 90-18 record.

Leland Keeling, a 125-pounder from Northside, lost 12-5 to Jamey Keller of Foley (Minn.) High School in the first round. In a consolation match, he was defeated 8-6 in overtime by John Lucero of New Mexico. Keeling finished his career at 70-18.

After receiving a bye through the first round, Chip Nininger of Northside lost 15-5 to Camden Belli of Ohio in the second round. Nininger wrestled in a consolation match Saturday night.

Hunter Morrissette sank a 175-yard shot for eagle on the last hole as he and partner Don Foster finished with a 66 to take a two-stroke lead through the first round of the Roanoke Valley Four-Ball Classic golf tournament at Hunting Hills Country Club.

Ned Baber and David Partridge are tied with Steve Firkins and Tim Chocklett for second at 68 heading into the final round of the 36-hole tournament on the par-70, 6,037-yard course.
