FORMER WALK-ON RUNS WILD FOR KEYDETS

Jabarr Bean, a freshman who walked on to the VMI football team last season and earned the No.2 tailback spot, rushed for 129 yards Saturday and led the Red squad to a 19-14 comeback victory in the annual Red-White spring game at Alumni Memorial Field in Lexington.

Bean, who earned a scholarship for his sophomore season, scored on a 4-yard touchdown run with 6:06 remaining in the game to provide the final margin. Bean also scored on an 8-yard run in the third quarter.

Thomas Haskins, who rushed for a school-record 1,509 yards last year, played sparingly and finished with 59 yards on eight carries for the White team, which led 14-6 after three quarters. Haskins accounted for all of the White team's scoring with a 10-yard touchdown run and a 30-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Greg Ellen.

``Our tailback situation came alive today,'' said Bill Stewart, preparing for his second season as VMI's coach. ``All spring long Jabarr Bean has gotten better, and today he was running like a big back should, and that will compliment Thomas.``

Al Lester, who started all 11 games at quarterback for the Keydets in 1994, completed seven of 17 passes for 119 yards and one interception for the Red team. Lester's biggest play was a 65-yard strike to Bath County's Tim Williams, who will return for his final season of eligibility.

``We had a couple of tough days, but overall I'm thrilled at the progress we've made this spring,`` said Stewart, who will welcome back 17 starters from last year's 1-10 team.

In other football scrimmages:

Former Cave Spring High School standout Tiki Barber rushed 13 times for 92 yards and a touchdown to highlight Virginia's scrimmage in Charlottesville.

Barber scored on a 50-yard run and also caught four passes for 32 yards. He and tailback C.E. Rhodes were the leading rushers in the scrimmage. Rhodes carried the ball nine times for 51 yards and had a 16-yard touchdown run.

Quarterbacks Tim Sherman and Mike Groh were the leading passers. Sherman completed eight of 12 passes for 95 yards and one touchdown. Groh completed seven of 15 passes for 50 yards, one touchdown and one interception.

Wide receiver Derick Byrd caught three passes for 71 yards and a touchdown.

Quarterback Jim Druckenmiller completed nine of 11 passes for 157 yards and the only touchdown in Virginia Tech's first scrimmage of spring practice.

Operating the first-team offense, Druckenmiller threw a 43-yard touchdown strike to flanker Shawn Scales to help the first team generate 230 yards in total offense.

Redshirt freshman Al Clark, Druckenmiller's chief rival for the starting job, directed the reserves. He was 3-of-8 passing for 54 yards.

Dwayne Thomas ran eight times for 50 yards and caught four passes for 64 yards.
