THEY WISH THEY COULD HAVE GIVEN MORE

Perhaps, Rhudy Camper best summed up the sentimentality surrounding the Hotel Roanoke.

"It just didn't seem that Roanoke was Roanoke without the hotel there," he said in recalling his own fond memories of the old hotel.

It was at the hotel where Camper, 45, proposed to his wife, Cathy. It was where they spent their wedding night, and it was where he once crashed a dance wearing a red golf shirt with an oversized jacket and ultra-skinny tie provided by the hotel.

Like many of the 2,000 some people who gave to the Renew Roanoke campaign to help restore the hotel, Camper, who lives in Bedford County, wished he could have done more.

As it was, he pledged $50, plus he and his wife bought three $50 engraved bricks that were used in the renovation.

"We were glad to be able to do our little part."
