Jena Jamison, who attends Benjamin Franklin Middle School, managed to correctly spell the word ``dehiscence'' (which means the bursting open of a capsule or pod).
The 13-year-old Callaway resident will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the national spelling bee beginning May 28.
She also will receive $100, a full set of the Encyclopedia Britannica and a Webster's Third International Dictionary.
For the last several rounds, Jamison battled it out with 13-year-old Jessica Tate, who came in second. The Jeter-Watson Intermediate seventh-grader received an electronic version of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
Third place went to Lucas Kline, an eighth-grader at Blacksburg Middle School.
The bee, sponsored by the Roanoke Times & World-News, brought together 18 school division winners from across Southwest Virginia and lasted almost two hours - longer than any other in its 22-year history.
