PULASKI COUNTY CHESS PLAYERS TO COMPETE AT STATE LEVEL

Several young Pulaski County chess competitors will move on to compete at higher levels Friday following good performances in the Virginia State Scholastic Championships in Fredericksburg last month.

Ming Chan, a Pulaski Middle School student who placed first in the state, and Todd Southern, who placed seventh, are both eligible to go to the national level in Little Rock, Ark., Friday through April 9.

Other members of the Pulaski Middle School chess team, who brought back the first-place team trophy from Fredericksburg, are Chris Terwilliger, Seth Davis, Nick Stark and Kendall Payne. Jess Southern is the coach.

Pulaski County High School finished in second in the state, and will leave Friday to compete nationally in Chicago, Ill.

The team members are Paul Burchett, who brought back fifth individual honors; King Chan, seventh individual honors; Kevin Liu and Tracey Lambert. Fran Shelton is the coach.

In the last 16 years in state chess competition, Pulaski County High has never placed below third. Teams from the school have brought back first-place honors 11 times, second place three times and third place twice.
