The budget work session is open to the public and will be held in the board meeting room on the third floor of the county courthouse in downtown Christiansburg.
Later this month the board is expected to adopt tax rates and the budget for the fiscal year beginning July 1. The board has advertised a 5-cent increase in the real-estate tax rate to balance the budget, though there doesn't appear to be support for that large a jump among a majority of the board.
Speakers at a public hearing last week in Christiansburg were evenly divided between those who favored the tax increase to pay for school and library spending plans, and those who urged the board to cut spending rather than increase the tax on property.
