COMPUTER COUP FOR CIRCUIT CITY

Circuit City stores nationwide will be the first to sell the new line of Hewlett-Packard home computers as the manufacturer moves into the home computer market.

Hewlett-Packard is known for making computers for commercial users and a line of printers. The new machines for home use will be equipped with CD-ROM drives, sound cards, extensive memory and speakers and will cost from $1,699 to $2,290. Three new models will be introduced, based on Intel Corp.'s Pentium microprocessors.

Circuit City will be the only stores to sell the computers through the summer, after which Hewlett-Packard plans to widen its distribution network, a spokeswoman at Hewlett-Packard's Palo Alto, Calif., headquarters said Monday.
