FERRUM FALLS TO NO.14 IN BASEBALL POLL

The Ferrum baseball team fell from No.4 to No.14 Tuesday in the NCAA Division III poll after suffering two losses last weekend to Dixie Conference rival Methodist.

Ferrum (18-7) fell to the Monarchs 5-2 and 6-0 in Fayetteville, N.C. Previously-unranked Methodist (15-12-1) jumped to No.17 in the poll. Wisconsin-Oshkosh (11-1) retained the No.1 spot.

The eight-team Division III World Series is scheduled to take place at the new baseball stadium in Salem May 25-30.

In other sports in the region:

Virginia Commonwealth built a 12-2 lead through 41/2 innings, then held off a VMI rally to defeat the Keydets 13-11 in a non-conference baseball game at Lexington.

VMI's Drew Haney smacked a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning to pull the Keydets (12-18) to within three. VMI added another run in the bottom of the ninth but stranded two runners as the game ended.

David Groseclose became VMI's all-time hit leader when he singled to lead off the bottom of the first. Groseclose, who now has 177 hits, moved past Mike Lamore who amassed 175 hits between 1982 and 1985.

Western Carolina squandered a nine-run lead, but still managed to defeat Virginia Tech 10-9 in a baseball game at Cullowhee, N.C.

Western Carolina (21-15) scored four runs in the first inning and added four more on a grand slam home run by Alex Tolbert in the second.

The Catamounts took a 9-0 lead before the Hokies (18-11) responded to tie the score at 9. Tech scored four runs in the fourth on a three-run homer by Kevin Barker and a solo shot by Matt Reynolds. David Fitt added a solo homer in the sixth and a three-run shot in the seventh.

Tech freshman reliever Jon Hand (1-2), who took the loss, retired the first two batters in the bottom of the eight before giving up a double to Jody Henson. Sophomore Charlie Gillian then replaced Hand and gave up the go-ahead run, a double by J.P. Burwell.

Sophomore Kelly Dampeer's three-run homer keyed a six-run second inning for Radford (15-15), which went on to defeat East Tennessee 12-5 in a baseball game at Radford.

Dampeer, a former Northside standout, established a new Radford season record with his 12th home run of the year. Eric Harris (3-2) was the winning pitcher, scattering six hits and one earned run while striking out five batters. George Jones (1-2) took the loss for the Bucs (15-16-1).

On Thursday, the Tech Athletic Office of Student Life will honor Virginia Tech athletes from 21 varsity sports with a celebration of National Student-Athlete Day at Squires Student Center in Blacksburg. The affair, which features a ``Sports Draft'' to establish teams for fan support for the 1995-96 school year, will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Dominion Room.
