Filchner's solo home run in the eighth inning gave him 26 homers and 152 RBI to eclipse the marks of 25 home runs and 151 RBI set by Denny Van Pelt.
Former Northside High School standout Kelly Dampeer hit an RBI double in the third to give Radford pitcher Chris Carr, a former William Byrd High School star, a 1-0 lead. Carr, making his first start, went five innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out five.
Radford (16-15) built a 4-0 lead after Donnie Fields drove in two runs with a two-out single in the fourth. The 49ers (22-12) tied the score at 4 as Chris Junghans and Vic Diaco drove in runs in a three-run sixth. The Highlanders added five runs in their half of the sixth inning to put away the game. Freshman Jason Anderson from Glenvar High School picked up the victory in relief, striking out three in 11/3 innings.

In Cullowhee, N.C., Western Carolina scored four runs in the first inning and breezed to an 8-2 victory over Virginia Tech in baseball.
Catamounts starter Clark Maxwell (5-2) held the Hokies to one hit through six innings, losing his shutout bid when Bo Durkac hit a solo homer in the seventh. Tech (18-12) scored its second run on an RBI single by Christian Conte in the ninth. Western Carolina is 22-15.
Former Tunstall High School standout Pat Daly went 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored to lead Ferrum (20-7) to a 10-1 baseball victory over Elon in Danville.
John Poindexter went 2-for-3 with two runs scored, and Jimmy Hamilton (5-3) picked up the victory for the Panthers (20-7).
Justin Fitzgerald scored three goals and William Metz added three goals and two assists to lead Roanoke past Lynchburg 13-10 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game in Lynchburg.
J.J. Blatt added two goals and two assists for the Maroons (9-3 overall, 4-0 conference). Todd Lowe scored three goals for Lynchburg (3-8, 0-3).
A trio of players scored three goals each as Roanoke routed Sweet Briar 19-4 in an ODAC women's lacrosse game in Salem.
Francesca Foord-Kelcey, Gayle Avery and Ali Ogelsby had three goals each, and the Maroons (7-2, 4-0) took a 14-3 halftime lead en route to their fifth consecutive victory. Sweet Briar is 3-4, 2-3.
Sean Casey's three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh inning powered Richmond to a 7-4 victory over VMI in a non-conference baseball game in Richmond.
The Keydets (12-19) had tied the score in the top of the inning on an RBI single by Drew Haney and a run-scoring groundout by Marlin Ikenberry. John Duffy (6-2) picked up the victory for the Spiders (24-6).
Kia Williams and Glossary Smith of Ferrum and Crystal Wilson of Roanoke College were selected to the second team of the Virginia Sports Information Directors' Division II-III all-state women's basketball team.
Former William Fleming High School standouts Marqueetta Randolph of Virginia Union and Linda Bell of Saint Paul were named first-team and honorable mention, respectively. Jessica Turgon of Marymount was chosen player of the year, and Longwood's Shirley Duncan was named coach of the year.
On the men's side, Bridgewater's Dan Rush was named player of the year and Hampden-Sydney's Tony Shaver was named coach of the year. Rush, a senior from Logan, W.Va., averaged 25.6 points per game, and Shaver led the Tigers to the final eight of the Division III tournament. Bryant Lee from Roanoke College and John Breedlove of Ferrum were named honorable mention.
In Catawba, the 3-Race All-Sport/East Coasters Virginia Mountain Bike Series begins Sunday. The third annual Trek Dragon's Back starts at 11:30 a.m., with the expert division followed by the other classes. For information, call at 981-1034.
