DERYCK BROWN, and TAMEKA BARNETT received scholarships during Virginia Western Community College's annual leadership breakfast celebrating black history.

Barnett, a graduate of Cave Spring High school, received the Mr. and Mrs. Emanuel Payne Scholarship for 1994-95. She is a first-year business administration major, an officer in the college's Black Student Organization and is employed as an insurance clerk for Endocrinology Associates.

Brown, a graduate of William Fleming High School, received the Continental Societies Inc. Scholarship for 1994-95. Brown is a first-year theater arts major in the liberal arts curriculum and plans to earn an associate of arts degree and possibly transfer to Roanoke College.

LYNCHBURG COLLEGE, has named several Roanoke Valley students to the dean's list for the fall semester.They are: Susan Davis, daughter of Ralph and Harriett Davis of Vinton; Kathryn Franke, daughter of Walter and Bernice Franke of Salem; Beaufort Martin, son of Geneva Martin of Roanoke; and Michael Wolf, son of Leonora Wolf of Roanoke.

LONGWOOD COLLEGE has named several Roanoke Valley students to the dean's list for the 1994-95 fall semester. They are: Meredith Leigh Brewer, Shenan Michele Burton, Danyel Bree Ferguson, Janet Marie Sylvia Hartman, Sharon Renee Patterson, Amy Denise Poff and Amy Lindsey Whately, all of Roanoke; Jennifer Nicole Hall and James Castleton Soltis, both of Salem; Elizabeth Anne Beckner and Stephanie Anne Chisholm; both of Vinton. Also, Heather Mangels of Blue Ridge and Deana B. Pinion of Troutville.

UPSILON TAU CHAPTER, KAPPA DELTA PI, at Roanoke College recently inducted several Roanoke Valley students. They are: Christy Caveness, Kay Thompson, Kathy Weather, Laurie Williams all from Roanoke; Paige Burge, Holly Cromer, Lorraine Smith all from Salem; Buddy Hansbarger, Vinton.

The following students were named as officers: Erica Dixon, president, and Amy Bagliani, treasurer, both Troutville; Kathy Roberts, historian/reporter, Salem.

WILLIAM BYRD HIGH SCHOOL has announced the names of students who were ranked in the National German Exam. Those earning a grade of superior were: Tamara Ayers, Omeed Dariani, Nadia Guertle, Stephanie McPhail and Whitney Saunders.

Achieving the grade of excellent were: Jessie Beach, Jay Calhoun, Elizabeth Childs, Rosalind Doty, Tracy Doupnik, Julia Jackson, Jennifer Krippel, Amanda Lytton, Wayne Sparrow and Schon Williams.

Achieving the grade of outstanding were: Joey Ball, Alan Begendahl, Gretchen Dress, Julie Duvall, Chris Fazler, Melissa Gutherie, Evan Maxey and Ben Snyder.

Tamara Ayers qualified for one of 45 trips to Germany being given away.

BRANDON S. FIELD, of Roanoke has been named to the dean's list for the fall semester at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

CARL CRENSHAW, of Roanoke recently graduated from Lynchburg College, where he earned a bachelor of science degree in psychology.

LORI BROWDER, daughter of Helen Browder of Roanoke and Charlie Browder of Hazard, Ky., won the title of Belle of the Blue Scholarship Pageant at Georgetown College, Georgetown, Ky.

Browder and other contestants were judged in scholarship interview, talent, public poise and appearance.

The prize included a $1,000 scholarship that Browder will use to study elementary education and music as well as minor psychology.

JOHN PETER AYLING, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Ayling of Roanoke, has been named to the dean's list of Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C.

FRANK SAUL, a James Madison Middle School eighth- grader, has been named the winner of the American history essay contest sponsored by the Margaret Lynn Lewis chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.

This year's topic was ``Living in America in Colonial Days: 1607-1776.''

Saul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert D. Saul Jr., wrote an essay, ``Colonial Architecture.'' He spoke as a ``plain ax'' that was used in building and rebuilding homes of several generations of one family of the Colonial period.

Saul is an honor-roll student, member of the Beta Club and on the wrestling team. He holds the rank of Life Scout in Boy Scout Troop 210, participates in city-sponsored basketball and serves as an acolyte at St. John's Episcopal Church.

MELANIE HAIN of Roanoke has been named to the honor roll at Gardner-Webb University in Boiling Springs, N.C.

RADFORD UNIVERSITY has announced that the following students have been named to Who's Who Among Students in American Universities: Llewellyn R. Pippert, Roanoke, nursing; Lexi Michele Hanes, Roanoke, communications; Suzanne Wright MacLeod, Daleville, nursing; and Donna R. Platter, Cloverdale, nursing.

MEREDITH G. KENDALL of Roanoke recently was inducted into the Alpha Mu Gamma national honorary society for foreign languages. Kendall is a senior Russian major at Ferrum College.

MICHAEL HAVEN of Roanoke was recently featured in an honors music recital held on the Radford University campus. Havens, a guitarist, performed ``Recuerdos de la Albambra'' and a selection for the guitar by Lennox Berkeley. Havens is a sophomore music-business major.

BRIDGEWATER COLLEGE has named the following area students to its dean's list: Michelle Rena Brown, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Garland Brown of Roanoke; Dale LeRoy Foster Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Dale Foster of Salem; Kelly Rebecca Honeycutt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Honeycutt of Blue Ridge; and Christy Leigh Osborne and Jeffrey Allen Osborne, son and daughter of Gary and Carol Osborne of Daleville.

EMILY BENNETT of Roanoke recently attended the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. Bennett, a junior at Patrick Henry High School, was among 350 National Scholars attending the conference from 46 states.

Throughout the six-day conference, participants interacted with key leaders and newsmakers in government, the media and the diplomatic corps.

The conference is sponsored by the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, a nonprofit, nonpartisan educational organization.

RADFORD UNIVERSITY had three Roanoke-area students participating on the interior design team that won Best in Show and People's Choice award at the annual March of Dimes Gourmet Gala benefit in Roanoke: Ede O'Dell, daughter of Charles O'Dell of Roanoke and Gail Albert of Salem; Cindy Grayson, daughter of Phyllis Grayson of Roanoke; and Shawna Rader, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Rader of Troutville.

VIRGINIA TECH recently awarded master's degrees to several Roanoke-area students. Those from Roanoke are: Steven C. McCulloch, adult education; Theresa Howard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William L. Howard, education administration; Heidi G. Baird, daughter of Dr. Bruce D. Baird, education; Clifford Gregory Robertson, son of Jennie Robertson and the late Cliff Robertson, education; Ann M. THE UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA had several students working in impoverished areas doing volunteer housing construction, relief work and tutoring during Alternative Spring Break. Those from the Roanoke Valley were: Steve Harmon and Almon English, both of Roanoke, and Jeff Johnson of Salem.
