Hines, who averaged 18.6 points and 6.3 assists a game, heads a six-player All-Metro basketball team picked by the media. The awards were presented at a banquet at the Salem Civic Center.
Northside placed Justin Porterfield and Ben Peete on the team along with William Byrd's Chris Childress, Lord Botetourt's Shannon Williams and Cave Spring's Matt Matheny.
The Metro Coach of the Year is Glenvar's Art Lawrence. The Highlanders finished second in the Group A state tournament and set a school record with 20 victories.
Ernie Bradd, head of the Western Virginia Basketball Officials' Association, presented the Rex Mitchell Award to Billy Rice as the year's top official. The WVBOA also chose Salem as the sportsmanship award winner.
Coaches of nine metro schools presented the unsung hero awards to members of their team. The unsung hero is based on a player's willingess to make sacrifices at the expense of glory and taking the responsibility of knowing what to do in order to allow the team to achieve maximum success.
The unsung heroes named were Chad Nabors (James River), Don Haga (North Cross), Jeff Eenigenburg (Patrick Henry), Keith Shupe (Lord Botetourt), Doug Cullinan (Cave Spring), Mike Jeffreys (Salem), Kevin Tuck (William Byrd), Quincy Freeman (William Fleming), Maurice Garrison (Northside) and Matt Atkinson (Glenvar). Roanoke Catholic did not participate.
