ALBY, Wynn Leslie, 65, of Pelham, Alabama, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. Mr. Alby attended the University of Texas, was a graduate of the Columbia School of Broadcasting in New York, he was a member of the Madison Heights Christian Church, Lynchburg, served in the 82nd Airborne, was founder & President of Birmingham Broadcast Council, was founder and retired President of National Broadcast Tal ent Coordinators, he worked for WROV Radio, Roanoke, WWOD, Lynchburg, was a broadcaster with Radio Station WBRC, was General Manager of WYDE Radio, was retired Executive VP of Columbia Pictures, he was the voice of Howard Bulldogs (Sanford University), the announcer for Birmingham Barons at Rickwood Field, was a past member of Town and Gown, and was a member of The Club. Surviving are his wife, Betty Bernard Alby, of Pelham; his son and his fiance, Steven Milton Alby and Cay Moffett, of Birmingham, Ala.; three daughters, Mrs. Judson M. (Jackie) Gardner Jr., of Lynchburg, Heather Ann Alby, of Birmingham, Ala., and Al and Jeanne Wilson, of Pembroke Pines, Fla.; five grandchildren, Lauren, Bryan and Morgan Gardner, Kristen Wilson and Cayce Moffett. A graveside service will be conducted 11 a.m. Friday at Mountain View Memorial Park with Rev. Coretha Morra officiating. The family will receive friends at Flora Funeral Service from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday and other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. John Bernard, of Boones Mill. COLLINS, Ruth Ferguson, 84, of Salem, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. Born on August 15, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Chalmers Ferguson and Lillian Bush Ferguson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Miller Collins; a sister, Grace Elizabeth Morton. Mrs. Collins was a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where she was church historian and a member of the choir for many years. Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 6, 1995, at 3:30 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Salem, with the Rev. CRAWFORD, Pernie Mae, 76, of Salem, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. DALTON, Maggie Turman, 99, of Indian Valley, passed away Monday, April 3, 1995, at Laurel Meadows Home, Laurel Fork. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earnest Dalton, daughter and son-in-law, Blanche and Marvin Harris. She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Victor and Ivory Dalton, Radford; two daughters, Maywood Reece and June Quesenberry, both of Indian Valley; one brother and four sisters-in-law, Donald and Daphnia Turman, Norfolk, Winnie Turman and Clydie Quesenberry, both of Indian Valley, Lula Dalton, Bluefield, W.Va.; three sisters and one brother -in-law, Sophia and J.R. DENT, Mildred Louise, 79, of Salem, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. She was preceded in death by her husband, John W. Dent and is survived by her daughter, Gale L. Flowers, Roanoke; son, Charles Lee, Greensboro, N.C.; brother, James Redman, Roanoke; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren. EDWARDS, Emma S. Haynes, of New Haven, Conn., formerly of Roanoke, passed away Friday, March 31, 1995. She was the widow of Marcellus A. Edwards Sr. She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Edwards Davis and Sharon L. Edwards, of West Haven, Conn., Carolyn L. Justus of New Haven, Conn.; one son, Marcellus A. Edwards Jr., of Hamden, Conn.; one daughter-in-law, Edna P. Edwards, Hamden, Conn.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters-in-law; Virginia E. Wright, Mattie L. FARMER, Lawrence Douglas, (``Larry""), 48, of Ozark, Ala., formerly of Roanoke, Va., died suddenly Sunday, March 26, 1995, of a heart attack. He was a 1965 graduate of William Fleming High School, a 1973 graduate of Virginia Tech, served as a Helicopter Pilot in Vietnam and a Flight Instructor at Fort Rucker Army Base. He was a member of the Air National Guard in Birmingham, Ala. Mr. Farmer was a member of the Ridgecrest Baptist Church in Ozark, Ala., where he sang in the choir. He was preceded in death by his father, William Roy Farmer Jr. He is survived by his wife, Dee Farmer; sons Loren and Ronnie; daughter Melissa, all of Ozark, Ala.; his mother, Betty Comer Farmer of Knoxville, Tenn.; his brothers, Bill Farmer of Ridgeway, and George Farmer of Richmond; sisters Betty Hungate and Gayle McDonald of Roanoke, and Anne Allen of Dalton, Ga., also are a number of nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held in Ozark, Ala., on April 2, 1995 at Ridgecrest Baptist Church with interment in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens.

FRANKLIN, Ernestine Poff 78, of Bassett, Rt. 5, Woody Circle, died Wednesday, April 5, 1995 at her home. She was born November 5, 1916, in Floyd County, to the late Harace H. Poff and Elma Boone Poff. She was a homemaker and a member of Stanleytown Baptist Church, Stanleytown. She is preceded in death by one daughter, Sandra F. Graham in 1975. Surviving are her husband, Glen T. Franklin; three daughters, Eleanor F. Cassady, Collinsville, Eadie F. McGraw, Roanoke, Linda F. Sellars, Bradenton, Fla.; one sister, Blondine Thomas, Roanoke; nine grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren. GLASS, Billy Glen, 61, of Christiansburg, died Wednesday, April 5, 1995, in a Radford hospital. He was born in Salem and was also a veteran. Survivors include in his wife, Jane Glass, Christiansburg; sons and daughters-in-law, Charlie and Rosey Glass, Robert Phillips and Eleanor Rowlett, Nelson and Becky Phillips; daughters and son-in-law, Elizabeth and Jeff Testerman, Brenda Quarrels; six grandchildren; brothers, Kenneth, Nelson and Harrison Glass; sister and brother-in-law, Christine and Bill Orick; and many nieces and nephews. HUDDLESTON, Gladys T., 85, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 5, 1995 at her home. She was a retired nurse and a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church. Surviving are her husband, Robert B. (""Burt"") Huddleston Sr.; son, Robert B. Huddleston Jr.; four grandchildren, Lynda Edghill, Robert B. Huddleston III, John Milton Huddleston, and Edward White Huddleston; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Lynn Huddleston, and Ethan Alexander Edghill, all of Roanoke. Funeral services will be held at Highland Park Untied Methodist Church 1 p.m. Friday, with Pastor Louis Timmons and the Rev. Douglas Paysour officiating. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery. HUGHES, Dr. Charles Brock, 77, of Wytheville, died at his home, Tuesday, April 4, 1995. Dr. Hughes is survived by his wife, Mary Austin Campbell Hughes; three daughters, Mary Austin Hughes Hodges, Laura Lee Hughes Johnson, both of Wytheville, Suzanne Hughes Detlefs, Atlanta, Ga.; and two sons, Charles Brock Hughes III of New York, and Fitzgerald Campbell Hughes, Roanoke; and eight grandchildren. Dr. Hughes graduated from Emory University and from the University of Georgia School of Medicine. He served as a physician in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He took his internship at St. Mary's Catholic Hospital, Cincinnati and residency in Pediatrics at the University of Georgia School of Medicine. He was the first medical specialist to come to Wythe County, when he started his practice of Pediatric Medicine in 1949. Dr. Hughes was one of the few doctors practicing during the polio epidemic, which struck Wythe County in 1950. A life-long sports enthusiast, Dr. Hughes and two friends founded and coached the first Sandlot Basketball Program in Wytheville's public schools. He was a team physician for the George Wythe High School football and basketball team for 30 years. In 1992, Brock Hughes was selected by the Virginia High School Coaches Association to receive the Dr. Frank McCue Sports Medicine Award for outstanding service to high school athletes. He was also inducted to membership in the Wythe County Sports Hall of Fame and is listed on the Sports Wall of Honor in Withers Park. Dr. Hughes served for many years on the vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church. He is a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International. Funeral services will be held at St. John's Episcopal Church at 3:30 p.m. Friday, Aril 7, 1995, with interment to follow in East End Cemetery. The family will welcome friends at the residence on Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to St. John's Episcopal Church Anniversary Fund or the Dr. Charles Brock Hughes Scholarship Fund at George Wythe High School, Wytheville. LEVINE, Burton, 70, of Roanoke, died in his home Tuesday, April 4, 1995, surrounded by his family, and leaving a lasting impression on all those he touched. Burt lived a rich life, and believed firmly in the goodness of all people, as demonstrated through his community service activities. He was a unifying force in his community and an active member of numerous religious, civic and professional organizations including Beth Israel Synagogue, Community School, Roanoke Jewish Community Council, Arts Council, American Civil Liberties Union, National Conference of Christian and Jews, Roanoke Mental Health Council, Community Task Force on Race Relations, Roanoke Valley Together, and Parent's Place. His life set an example of tolerance, understanding and compassion for others. He is remembered in the broadcast community as the President/Owner of WROV Radio, which ran from 1955 until 1989. Burt continued to work as a broadcast consultant, most recently in marketing and development for WVTF Public Radio. Burt was the devoted husband for 45 years of Muriel Levine, who passed away in October after a long illness. He is survived by his children and their spouses, Marc Levine, Edie Read, Karen Levine and Dennis Nowak, David and Sandy Levine, Rhona Levine and Gary Tate, Tobey Levine and Fred Stoddard, and Beth Levine; and by his grandchildren, Sam and Jonathan Levine, Joe and Sara Nowak, Chris Vaughan and Allison D'Aurizio, and Adam, Hannah and Zachary Tate; he also leaves his identical twin brother, Melvin Levine; his sister, Mollie Freed; and his wife's family, parents, Lou and Rose Poller, brother and sister-in-law, Jan and Judy Poller, and sisters, Leah and Nidra Poller. The Levine family would like to express their extreme gratitude to the staff of Good Samaritan Hospice for sharing their compassion and support with Burt and his entire family. MARTIN, James Otha Sr., 72, of Roanoke, died Wednesday, April 5, 1995. He was retired from Rockydale Quarries and was a U. S. Army Veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Hazel F. Martin, Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Nancy M. and Richard L. Hall, Roanoke; sons and daughters-in-law, James O. Martin Jr., and wife, Wolsun K., Daniel W. and Sandra B. MAYS, Ivy Garrett, 84 of Waynesboro, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995 in a Charlottesville Hospital. She was born May 8, 1910, in Rockbridge County, daughter of the late Robert J. and Gillie Page Garrett. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph A. Mays and a daughter, Barbara A. Mays. She was a member of the Front Royal First Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Ralph Andrew mays Jr., of Stuarts Draft; two daughters, Nadine M. Seay, Stuarts Draft, Naldar Fay Fauber, Buena Vista; one brother, Ollie Page Garrett, Lexington; 8 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren. MILAM Nellie, 89, of Roanoke, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. She was a resident of Friendship Health Care Center and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church for many years. She was preceded in death by her husband, William R. Milam, a son, Bill Milam, and a daughter, Dorothy Stevens. Surviving are a daughter and son-in-law, Katherine M. and Julian R. Cooper, of Vinton; son and daughter-in-law, Elmer P. and Patsy A. MYERS, Charles Earnest, Sr., 75, of Willis, passed away Monday, April 3, 1995, at the Virginia Veterans Care Center in Roanoke. He was an Army Veteran of World War II. He is survived by his wife, Marie Harris Myers, Willis; son, Charles E. Myers, Jr., Willis; three daughters, Delores Hylton, Meadows of Dan, Charlotte Wimbish, Eden, N.C., Amanda Clark, Morganton, N.C.; half brother, Ralph Renner, Washington, D.C.; special cousin, Pearl M. PAGE, Ronald Sylvester, (""Candy""), 43, of Roanoke, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 1995. Survivors include his mother, Reva Bouseman, of Roanoke; two brothers, Jesse Bouseman, of Roanoke, and James Bouseman, of Anchorage, Alaska; four sisters, Clara Bouseman, Hope Flint, Mary Bouseman, and Constance Finney, all of Roanoke; two aunts, Mary Baker, of Roanoke, and Pauline Gills, of Washington, D.C.; and a host of other relatives and friends. POWERS, Miss Janie Estelle, 91, of Winterville, N.C., a native of Lexington, died Monday, April 3, 1995, at her home. She was born July 15, 1903, in Rockbridge County, daughter of the late Charles A. and Viola Mae Lackey Powers. Miss Powers was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Member of Retired Teachers Association, and taught school in the Rockbridge Co. School system for 46 years. She is survived by her sister, Hazel Ralph, Winterville, N.C.; brother, Harry Powers, Lexington; four nieces, Mrs. Betty Jean Asbell, Winterville, N.C., Mrs. Norma Jean Bixby, Four Oaks, N.C., Mrs. Mary Jane Yeager, Fishersville, Mrs. Doris Wartman, Las Vegas, Nev.; three nephews, Frank Powers, Red Banks, N.J., James Powers, Alexandria, Howard B. RICE, William H. (""Skinny""), 86, of Roanoke died Wednesday, April 5, 1995. He retired after 441/2 years in N & W East End Shops, in 1972. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice P. Rice. He is survived by two nephews and their wives, George P. Rice Jr. and wife, Jane, Fort Worth, Texas, Maynard W. Rice and wife, Linda, Vinton; one sister-in-law, Montana P. Rice, Radford; and numerous other family members including, devoted friends, Rita and James Loyd, Vinton. STIFF, Maggie L., (""Nellie""), of Route 1, Thaxton, Union Community, died Thursday, March 30, 1995 at her residence. She was born in Bedford County, a daughter of the late Henry Lowry Stiff and Sara Elizabeth Creasy Stiff. She was a retired waitress and employee of the Bedford Weaving Mill. She was also a member of Union United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death be her brother, Lacy M. Stiff. She is survived by a brother, Carlisle (""Whitey"") Stiff, of Thaxton; two sisters, Marie S. Hossfeldt, of Washington, D.C., and Elsie S. Weaver, of Silver Springs, Md.; also several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel on Saturday, April 8, 1995 from 1 to 2 p.m. where the services will be conducted at 2 p.m. with the Rev. E. Lee Chatten officiating. TRUSLOW, Virginia Byers, (""Jenny""), 70, of Beuna Vista, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. Born in Beuna Vista on June 13, 1924, she was the daughter of the late William Douglas Byers and Elsie Lynn Byers. She was a member of the Irish Creek Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was preceded in death be her husbands, William Clinton Truslow and John R. Templeton. She is survived by three sons, Michael S. Byers, of Houston Texas, William L. Truslow, of Beuna Vista, and Dana P. Truslow, of Eau Claire, Wis.; two sisters, Phyllis Foquer and Vivian Cash, both of Beuna Vista; two brothers, William Byers and Jerry Byers, both of Beuna Vista; ten grandchildren and one great-grandchild; a special and dear friend, Elizabeth Hardy. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, April 7, 1995 at Lomax Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Tom Cothran officiating. Interment will follow in Green Hill Cemetery. VANDERGRIFT, Mary Elizabeth Nichols (""Libby"") 57 of Roanoke, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, April 4, 1995, in a local hospital. Surviving are her husband Charles M. WEADE, Annis Louise Young, 79, of Buchanan, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. She was a member of the Springwood Baptist Church and was preceded in death by her husband, Allie Weade and two sons, Allie Weade Jr. and Monte Weade. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Weade Unroe of Iron Gate, Gloria Weade Day of Boones Mill, Virgie Weade Rothwell of Buchanan; one sister, Audrey Terry of Roanoke; 13 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren. WEDEMEYER, Elizabeth Holzgrefe, 90, of Richmond, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995. She was born in Alfhausen, Germany and was the widow of Frank Wedemeyer. Surviving are her son, Frank H. Wedemeyer; daughters, Mary Robinson, Ann Lindsay, Betty Boarman, and Rita Baird; 16 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Her remains rest at the Joseph W. Blileys Funeral Homes Staples Mill Chapel, Richmond, Va. where a wake will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery. Donations may be made to the church building fund.

WILLIAMS, Shirley Ann 59, of Bedford, died Tuesday, April 4, 1995 in Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born September 16, 1935, in Holyoke, Mass., a daughter of the late Anna Kelly Smus. She is survived by her husband, Carl A. Williams, Sr., Bedford; son and daughter-in-law, Carl A. Williams, Jr. and Sandra Williams, Marino Valley, Calif.; son, Edward I. Williams, Adelanto, Calif.; one grandson, Brandon Williams, Marino Valley, Calif.; one sister, Marilyn Leary, Rialto, Calif.; one aunt, Clara Kelly, Holyoke, Mass.; one uncle, Owen kelly, Holyoke, Mass. A mass of Resurrection will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, April 8, 1995, at the Carder-Tharp Funeral Chapel with the Rev. James J. Begley officiating. WILSON, Darrell, 62, of Radford, passed away Tuesday, April 4, 1995, at Radford Community Hospital. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was retired Supt. for the DeBuck & Shelor Construction Co. He was preceded in death by his parents, J.S. & Lilliam Nester Wilson, one brother, Carl Wilson, and one sister, Bessie W. Williams. Surviving are his wife, Juanita Dotson Wilson; two sons, Darrell Wilson Jr., of Dublin, and Anthony Wilson, of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Mrs. Renee Cecil, of Roanoke; two stepsons, Issac Johnston Jr., of Dublin, and Steve Johnston, of Vienna; four brothers, Bill Wilson, of Lutz, Fla., Sam Wilson, of Dublin, Ray Wilson, of Parrott, and Jim Wilson, of Radford; three sisters, Mrs. Neta Albright, of Radford, Mrs. Mae Legg, of Columbus, Ga., and Mrs. Althea Moran, of Shawsville; and five grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Friday, April 7, 1995 at 1 p.m. at the Calvary Baptist Church in Radford with Rev. O.D. Morgan officiating. Burial will follow in Sunrise Burial Park in Radford. WOOD, Bessie L., 81, of Roanoke, died Friday, February 3, 1995, at Roanoke Memorial Hospital after a brief illness. She was a 1936 graduate of Jefferson Hospital School of Nursing. She was a long-time nurse in Roanoke, having worked as a private duty nurse and at Jefferson Hospital in Roanoke until her retirement, except for a brief period when she lived in Florida and for a period when she was a nurse at DePaul Hospital in Norfolk. She also served in the Naval Reserve Nurse Corps. A native of Stickleyville in Lee County, she was the daughter of the late James Duff Litton and Nancy Rasnic Litton. She married Guy S. Wood of Roanoke in 1941. He died in 1961. She is survived by two sisters, Lucille L. Elkins, of Germantown, Ohio, and Leta Beene of Chesapeake, Va.; two brothers, Lester Litton of Palmetto, Fla., and Bradley T. Litton of Jacksonville, Fla. She also leaves the following nieces and nephews, Margaret Vaden of Hamilton, Ga., Nancy Scism of Greensboro, N.C., Betty Kilgore of Norfolk, Patty Darnell of Kingsport, Tenn., Neal Howard of Danville, Brenda Hayes of Durham, N.
