TEEN ARRESTED IN BEATING OF STORE CLERK

A teen-ager suspected of beating a convenience store clerk while customers watched has been taken into custody, police said.

Police got a flood of calls identifying the suspect after a surveillance videotape of the beating was played on television news stations, city police spokesman Jim Shelhorse said Thursday.

At least six customers at the 7-Eleven store watched but did nothing Monday night as the suspect pounded the woman.

``Apparently, that tape upset a lot of people,'' Shelhorse said. ``We were swamped with calls.''

The 17-year-old suspect, who was not identified because he is a juvenile, was arrested Tuesday night in Orange County on an unrelated charge of possession of stolen property, said Capt. C.G. Feldman of the Orange County Sheriff's Office. He is being held on $1,500 bond.

City detectives said bystanders left the store after the beating and offered no assistance to the woman.
