VCU SPANKING SUIT DISCLOSED

A former Virginia Commonwealth University student has filed sexual harassment lawsuits seeking more than $1 million from the university and one of its professors over a 1992 spanking incident.

Amna Kadiki, 26, of Richmond said she was spanked by associate biology professor Michael L. Fine in August 1992.

According to papers filed in U.S. District Court, Fine spanked Kadiki after she finished a makeup test in a biology class. Kadiki missed the original test because of her father's funeral, the papers say.

The $850,000 lawsuit against the university was filed in July, but court papers were only unsealed Monday at Kadiki's request.

``We attempted to negotiate this quietly with the university, but it didn't work,'' said Eileen N. Wagner, Kadiki's lawyer. ``We unsealed the papers because we were getting nowhere.''

Kadiki also filed a $200,000 lawsuit in Richmond Circuit Court against Fine last summer. That case is set for trial June 26.

University lawyer David L. Ross referred questions to the university's press office, which would not comment on the case.

Fine's lawyer, Michael Glass, said he did not think comment on the case before trial was appropriate.

Fine was convicted of misdemeanor assault and sentenced to a day in jail and fined $250. He admitted to spanking the student but said she had consented to it.
