NEW RIVER ON TRACK FOR 1995

More competitors and a greater variety of racing will highlight the season at New River Valley Speedway in Radford when the schedule opens at 8 p.m. Saturday for a 24-week run.

The ``Eagle Country 107-PSK/Pizza Den 200'' will feature a 100-lap NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late Model Stock race, plus 35 laps for the Limiteds and 25 each for the Mod Mini, Mini and Pure Stock drivers. An added attraction will be a 10-lap exhibition race for the Legend Cars. Double points will be awarded in all divisions.

The Legend Cars, Classic Race Cars, Mid-Atlantic Modifieds and Enduro races will be featured on Saturday nights when the Mod Mini division is not in action.

Three races will be televised live this year by WDBJ (Channel 7). The first is a Sunday afternoon event on May 21. The first Legend Car race will be April 15, when drivers from the Tri-State and Quad-State regions converge on NRVS for their first points race of the season. Three Enduro races will be held, plus one for the women. The Classic Race Cars will do battle for national honors.

Gates will open at 2 p.m. Saturday, with practice starting at 4. Qualifying begins at 6 p.m. with the first race at 8. Admission is $10 for adults and $1 for children 12 and younger.

In other sports in the region:

Bo Durkac's triple in the bottom of the 11th inning scored Mike Terhune with the winning run as Virginia Tech slipped past Marshall 6-5 in a baseball game in Blacksburg.

Terhune reached first by drawing a walk, and Durkac lined a shot that bounced over right fielder Craig Brumfield's head and rolled all the way to the fence, allowing Terhune to score. John Thomas (2-0) picked up the victory in relief for the Hokies (19-12).

Marshall (8-26) tied the score in the ninth when Marshall Henry singled and pinch-runner Ryan Roush scored on a fielder's choice later in the inning by Jim Reynolds. Terhune finished with three RBI for the Hokies and David Fitt drove in two.

Chad Maddox set a Ferrum single-game RBI record with nine as the Panthers pounded Emory & Henry in a doubleheader at Ferrum, 15-10 in the first game and 16-2 in the second.

Mattox went 4-for-5 with two home runs, including a grand slam in the fifth inning, in the first game as he broke the record of 7 RBI set by All-American Heath Burcher against Methodist in 1989.

Todd Cunningham went 4-for-4 with a home run, an RBI and scored five runs for 14th-ranked Ferrum (22-7). Keith Mayhew (7-1) pitched 42/3 innings of relief and struck out nine as he picked up the win.

Maddox drove in three runs and scored three more in the second game. Anthony Smith pitched six innings and struck out five as he got the win.

Jason Delp and Keith Maiden each went 2-for-4 for Emory & Henry (7-12).

Jeff Preston of Lynchburg College and Galen Foulois from Randolph-Macon fired 1-over-par 73s to share medalist honors at the Bridgewater/ODAC Round Robin Golf Tournament at Ingleside Golf Course in Staunton.

Preston's performance enabled Lynchburg to win the team competition with a 306. Randolph-Macon finished second, six strokes off the pace, and Hampden-Sydney (318) was fourth. Roanoke College (337) finished fifth and Bridgewater (338) placed sixth. Al Vizgaitis finished with a 79 to lead Roanoke.

Four Timesland players were named honorable-mention all-state by the Virginia Independent Schools.

Rod Mitchell, Joseph McClinton and Ryan Smith are from Division II champion Carlisle. McClinton is a junior, and the other two are seniors. The other Timesland player to earn honorable-mention honors was North Cross' Hal Johnson, also a senior.

The 10-man first team is paced by Ossie Jones of St. Stephen's/St. Agnes, where he averaged 21.9 points a game and was the VIS Player of the Year. The Coach of the Year was Win Palmer of Flint Hill.

Repeat selections on the VIS all-state team were Jones, Tom Hauser of Trinity Episcopal and Antric Klaiber of Alexandria Episcopal. The team is completed by Flint Hill's Josh Stringer and Jim Fitzpatrick, Huguenot's Kestutis Marciulionis, Atlantic Shores Christian's Kenny Inge, Cape Henry's Kinte Smith, Potomac's Eddie McNamara and Bishop O'Connell's Mike Sullivan.
