ROCKY MOUNT LEADER BENNETT DIES AT 86

Emmett Bennett, a former Rocky Mount vice mayor who served 18 years on town council, died Thursday at his home. He was 86.

He was raised on a Franklin County farm and spent his life serving his native community.

Besides serving on town council, Bennett formerly was chief of the Rocky Mount Fire Department and a member of the board of the Boy Scouts and the Franklin County Chamber of Commerce. He also served on the Rocky Mount Industrial Development Authority.

Bennett was the owner of Bennett Tire Service and continued to be involved with his business until near the time of his death.
