The Avalanche (1-1), which lost 10-0 to the Cannons in the season opener Thursday, got solo home runs from third baseman Forry Wells, outfielder Pedro Carranza and outfielder Mark Wells.
Forry Wells' homer came in the second inning off Cannons' starter Chris Clemons (0-1) and gave the Avalanche a 1-0 lead. Carranza's shot came in the fourth inning to give Salem a 2-0 lead. Salem added another run in the fourth and then two more in the seventh, including Mark Wells' solo shot.
The Avalanche led 3-0 before Prince William scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the lead to 3-2. Prince William (1-1) threatened again in the fifth, putting runners at first and third with no outs. Jason Goligoski hit a grounder to first base that Salem's Nate Holdren gobbled up. Holdren threw out Andre Newhouse trying to score from third, and the Avalanche managed to get out of the inning with no damage done.
Prince William threatened again off reliever Mike Saipe in the ninth inning, putting one run on the board and sending the tying run to the plate, but pinch-hitter Sandy McKinnon grounded out against Curt Conley. Saipe picked up the win in relief, going 3 2/3 innings, giving up three hits and one run while striking out six. Conley registered the save.
