CONSTRUCTION ON 220 MAY CAUSE DELAYS

Motorists planning to drive on U.S. 220 in Roanoke and Roanoke County should consider taking alternative routes today, because of construction on sections of the Roy L. Webber Highway.

From 6 a.m. to 7 p.m., northbound traffic across the Roanoke River will be reduced to one lane.

Laura Bullock of the Virginia Department of Transportation said motorists should use extra caution while driving through the construction, which will widen 220 to a total of six lanes.

Several bridges are a tight fit for traffic, with northbound lanes reduced to 11 feet wide and concrete barriers placed on either side. The speed limit in this area has been lowered to 45 mph and is being strictly enforced by police.

In Roanoke County, U.S. 220 south of Virginia 419 will have one lane open in each direction from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. today.
