W&M, JMU COSTS CLIMB

James Madison University and The College of William and Mary announced Friday that they will raise tuition and fees next academic year.

Costs at William and Mary will increase 2.9 percent for Virginia residents and 5.8 percent for out-of-state residents.

According to a fee structure approved by the board of visitors, the average per-year cost will increase from $8,854 to $9,110 for Virginians and from $17,766 to $18,800 for out-of-state residents.

``William and Mary has worked very hard to keep its costs down, and we want to make sure that we remain competitive,'' said Timothy J. Sullivan, the college's president.

At James Madison, costs will increase 2.9 percent for in-state residents and 3.8 percent for nonresidents.

The board of visitors said fees will increase from $3,900 to $4,014 for Virginia residents and from $7,994 to $8,294 for out-of-state residents.
