RADFORD, ABBOTT WIN IN SHUTOUT

Jim Abbott pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out 13 to lead Radford to a 4-0 Big South Conference baseball victory Friday over Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C.

Abbott (5-2) walked one batter in recording the third shutout of his career.

Jeff Dean homered in the third inning for Radford (17-15, 5-2).

The Virginia Tech men's and women's track teams competed in the Duke Invitational in Durham, N.C., and three athletes placed in their respective events.

Junior Mike Abbott took third place in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 15 feet, 6 inches. Sophomore Michelle Smith was 14th in the javelin with a throw of 106 feet, 5 inches. Former Cave Spring standout John Hawthorne came in second in the 10,000-meter run with a time of 30:53.03. The meet concludes today as the Hokies gear up for the Metro Conference Outdoor Championships April 21-23.
