THE LIBERTY coach is voted by the media as the Group AA coach of the year.

Liberty's Mark Hanks, who guided his team to the first berth ever for a Seminole District team in the the Group AA semifinals, is the Associated Press Group AA coach of the year.

Martinsville's Mike Martin is joined on the AP's All-Group AA team by sophomore Antoine Willie and junior Montoria Valentine, who led Nansemond River to a 26-2 record and a state championship.

Also represented on the team announced Saturday was Shannon Carter of Gate City, and Robbi Moose of Warren County.

Martin, a 6-foot senior who moves up from the AP's second team last year, averaged 22.1 points in leading Martinsville to the Piedmont District regular-season title and an 18-6 record.

Willie, who led the South Hampton Roads area with a scoring average of 28 points, also averaged 5.0 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He broke the three-game Group AA tournament scoring record with 91 points (35, 26 and 30). Leonard, who also had a 52-point game earlier in the season, is the AP's Group AA player of the year.

Valentine averaged 18.6 points, 10.1 rebounds and 4.3 assists.

Carter, a 6-1 senior, was voted by the media as the top player in Southwest Virginia in either Group A or Group AA. He led the Region IV champions to a 21-3 record with averages of 25 points and nine rebounds. The only returning starter for Gate City this season, Carter led the team in scoring in 20 of 23 games and was the only player to average more than 12 points.

Moose, a 6-4 senior, averaged 30.1 points, 6.8 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 3.5 steals for the Group AA quarterfinalists. Moose was The Winchester Star's and the Northern Virginia Daily's player of the year.

The AP's second-team selections are Northside's Justin Porterfield, Liberty's Stephen Shrader, Willie Lam of Spotswood, Andre Quarles of Louisa County, and Damian Woolfolk of Caroline.
