MADDOX SETS RBI RECORDS FOR FERRUM

How did Chad Maddox top driving in nine runs in one baseball game?

He drove in 10 the next.

The senior second baseman for Ferrum broke his own school record by driving in 10 runs Saturday in Ferrum as the Panthers ripped Shenandoah 22-0 in a Dixie Conference game shortened to seven innings. Maddox twice has had nine RBI - in last Wednesday's win over Emory and Henry and in another game last season.

Maddox has 54 RBI this season, breaking the Ferrum record of 51 previously shared by Jim Sood (1987-88) and Grant Renfro (1989).

Maddox hit a three-run home run in the first inning and a grand slam - his fourth of the season - in the fifth. Franklin County HIgh School product Riley Hodges drove in three runs for the Panthers (23-7 overall, 3-4 Dixie).

Maddox's game overshadowed a one-hitter thrown by Keith Mayhew (8-1). The senior didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and struck out 12 batters while walking only three.

In other baseball and softball:

Ferrum's softball team moved into first place in the Dixie Conference with a doubleheader split with Christopher Newport on Saturday in Ferrum. The Panthers lost the opener 6-1, then won 4-3 for its first victory in 18 games against Christopher Newport (29-7-2, 6-4).

The Panthers (18-9, 5-3) can win the Dixie title outright with a sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan on Tuesday in Ferrum.

Julie Shifflett went 2-for-3 and doubled in the winning run in the third inning in Ferrum's victory. Franklin County's Betsy Forbes went 2-for-4 and drove in the only run in the loss.

David Groseclose set the VMI stolen base record and Ryan Glynn hit a pair of home runs and struck out 13 in the first game of a doubleheader as the Keydets went on to sweep both games, 12-7 and 9-6, over Appalachian State in Southern Conference baseball in Lexington.

Groseclose, a former All-Timesland player from Alleghany High, stole two bases to set a VMI career mark and leave him just six short of the Southern Conference record. He now has 94 for his career, eclipsing the old mark of 92 set by Gary Sibayan (1986-89).

Glynn hit a three-run blast in the first game while picking up his fourth win of the season. He added a solo shot in the second game for a combined five RBI. Louie Napoleon went 3-for-4 for VMI in the first game with two stolen bases.

Tulane claimed a baseball doubleheader sweep of Virginia Tech by scores of 6-3 and 5-4 after taking leads of 6-0 and 4-0 in Metro Conference action in New Orleans.

Tech (19-14, 2-3) had a seventh-inning bases-loaded rally thwarted in the first game. In the second game, the Hokies rallied to tie the score at 4-4 before Tulane (25-12, 5-3) got an RBI single from Craig Brown in the sixth inning.

Brian Fitzgerald (4-3) and Sean Hummel (3-1) got the losses for the Hokies.

Pinch hitter Jeff Dean's single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Jeff Collins from third to lift Radford to a 3-2 Big South Conference victory over Charleston Southern in Charleston, S.C.

Collins had singled with one out in the seventh and moved to second on a passed ball. After going to third on a single by Joe Raccuia, Collins scored on Dean's single as Radford (18-16, 6-3) won two of three games in the series.

In the first game, Rob Rowe's three-run homer broke a third-inning tie and pitcher Stan Kowalski pitched a complete-game seven-hitter to lead Charleston Southern to a 5-1 win. Kowalski struck out six and walked two in his third complete game of the season for the Buccaneers (9-23, 4-8). Radford left-hander Jason Anderson (2-4), the former Glenvar High standout, took the loss despite pitching a complete game and allowing seven hits while striking out four.

Oxendine shines in Tech scrimmage

Strong play by the first-team defense, the rushing of tailback Ken Oxendine, and good passing by the Virginia Tech quarterbacks highlighted the Hokies' football scrimmage Saturday in Lane Stadium.

The first-team defense stopped the opposition 11 times on downs and produced one safety. Linebacker George DelRicco and tackle Jim Baron had six tackles each and cornerback Antonio Banks had five. Reserve linebacker Chris Tate led the Hokies with eight tackles.

Oxendine, a sophomore, gained 98 yards on 13 carries and scored two touchdowns on runs of 37 and 4 yards. Jim Druckenmiller, last season's backup quarterback, connected on 10 of 21 passes for 127 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown pass to Shawn Scales. Al Clark completed 6 of 10 passes and threw for two touchdowns while Cody Whipple finished 5-of-10 for 61 yards.

The Hokies will practice three days each for the next two weeks leading up to the Maroon-Orange game on Sat., April 22, at 7 p.m. in Blacksburg.

nFormer Cave Spring standout Tiki Barber rushed 18 times for 203 yards and scored two touchdowns to highlight Virginia's spring football scrimmage in Charlottesville.

Barber scored on runs of 2 and 12 yards, and also caught one pass for 11 yards. Quarterback Tim Sherman completed 12 of 18 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns - a 75-yard strike to Pete Allen and a 44-yard pass to Brian McCarthy.

Mike Groh also threw two touchdown passes, both to Germaine Crowell, who caught four passes for 139 yards.

Defensive back Joe Rowe led the defense with 12 tackles and a forced fumble. Jamie Sharper added 10 tackles while linebackers Skeet Jones and Greg Terry had nine each.

The Cavaliers play their spring game at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond.

In Fairfield, Conn., Rob Worrell scored six goals, including the final five for VMI, as the Keydets (6-2) rallied to defeat Fairfield (0-6) in a lacrosse game in the rain and sleet.

The Stags led 3-0 before VMI rallied to take a 7-4 halftime lead it never relinquished. Joe Brackman had two goals for the Keydets.

Kevin Tersolo and Jason Davenport scored four goals each as fifth-ranked Roanoke defeated No.19 Greensboro (8-3) 16-9 in men's lacrosse for the Maroons' seventh straight victory.

Roanoke improved to 10-2, equalling the school record for most wins in a regular season set by the 1978 national championship team. The seven consecutive wins also tied the school mark.

J.J. Blatt added two goals and five assists for the Maroons, who scored two goals in the first minute of the game and opened up a 5-0 lead they never relinquished.

Virginia Tech honored 180 student-athletes who have excelled in academics at the fourth annual Athletic Directors' Honors Breakfast at The Donaldson Brown Center.
