Hits have been hard to come by for the Salem Avalanche in the early part of this season.
On Saturday, they didn't come at all.
Prince William right-handers Brian Woods and Archie Vazquez combined to no-hit Salem in the Cannons' 8-0 Carolina League victory. It was baseball's first official no-hitter of the season. The first no-hitter of the year came March 6 when five Atlanta Braves pitchers teamed to beat the New York Mets 5-0 in a replacement game at spring training.
The Avalanche (1-2) also were blanked by Prince William 10-0 in the season opener Thursday. The four-game series concludes today at 1:30 p.m.
Woods, a 20th-round draft pick by the Chicago White Sox in June 1993, worked seven innings before reaching his pitch count. The 23-year-old right-hander, who was 4-12 for South Bend (Ind.) last season, allowed only two walks and hit one batter while striking out four. Only Salem's Forry Wells made it as far as second base, walking then reaching second on a second-inning groundout.
Wells also had the Avalanche's hardest hit of the night, a well-struck line drive caught by second baseman Frank Menechino in the second inning.
Vazquez pitched two perfect innings and collected four strikeouts. He had 28 saves for Hickory (N.C.) last year.
A crowd of 3,676 saw the first no-hitter for the Prince William franchise since Fernando Gonzales, pitching for the Alexandria Dukes, held Winston-Salem hitless in a 3-0 victory on Aug.13, 1982.
Andre Newhouse reached base in every at-bat with three hits, including a triple, and a walk for Prince William. He also scored two runs and drove in another run. Magglio Ordonez also had three hits in the Cannons' 13-hit attack against Salem loser Jamey Wright and three other Salem right-handers.
