HOMERS HELP POWER HOKIES TO 13-9 WIN

Bo Durkac hit two home runs and drove in four runs as Virginia Tech defeated Tulane 13-9 in a Metro Conference baseball game Sunday in New Orleans, La.

Durkac led off the game with a home run and belted a three-run homer in the second inning to give the Hokies (25-13 overall, 5-4 Metro) the lead for good.

Tech also got a two-run homer from designated hitter Corey Snyder and a two-run shot from center fielder Kevin Barker.

Durkac, second baseman Mike Terhune, and catcher Josh Herman all had three hits for the Hokies, who travel to Radford for a 3 p.m. game Tuesday against the Highlanders.

Tommy Skul doubled home two runs in the eighth inning to give Appalachian State an 11-9 victory over VMI in a Southern Conference baseball game in Lexington. VMI (14-21 overall, 8-10 SC) rallied for a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth on run-scoring hits by Romando Harrison and Dave Sullivan.

Ferrum's Chad Maddox went 3-for-4 and set two school records, powering the Panthers to a 14-7 victory over Shenandoah in a Dixie Conference baseball game in Ferrum. Maddox has 501 at-bats, bettering Jeff Lemie's mark of 498 from 1989-92, and 176 hits, surpassing Grant Renfrow's 175 from 1986-89.

Riley Hodges, a former Franklin County standout, went 4-for-5 with a two-run homer and six RBI to lead the Panthers (24-7 overall, 4-4 conference). Ferrum's Jimmy Hamilton (6-3) pitched seven innings and struck out 14. Shenandoah's record slipped to 8-12, 2-6.

Bates Brown gave up two earned runs in seven innings to pick up his third victory of the season as Washington and Lee won the second game of a non-conference baseball doubleheader 6-5 over St. Mary's in Lexington. The Generals lost the first game 6-3.

The Generals (5-14) were led by Todd Stanton, who had a two-run double in the second game. Brian Lopez had four hits in the two games for St. Mary's (8-16) and reached base in seven of his eight plate appearances. Spike Altman went the distance to pick up the win in the first game.

Washington and Lee came back from a 10-day layoff for exams to defeat Virginia Wesleyan 19-5 in an Old Dominion Athletic Conference men's lacrosse game in Norfolk.

Andy Dutton scored three goals and added two assists for the sixth-ranked Generals (7-2, 5-1) before suffering an injury in the opening minutes of the third quarter. Paul Stanley added three goals and the Generals got two each from Ande Jenkins, Ty Tydings, and Tom Fallace. Tom McGurty led the Marlins (6-3,1-2) with three goals.

Defending national champion Trenton State picked up its 64th consecutive victory with a 20-7 win over Washington and Lee in a non-conference women's lacrosse game played at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg.

Jennifer Mazzucco led Trenton (7-0) with four goals and three assists and Pam Puguez also had four goals. Lindsay Coleman paced the Generals (6-3) with three goals while Nicole Ripken added two. Sophomore goalie Brooke Glenn had a career-high 23 saves in a losing effort.

Sarah Hogan and Megan Snyder scored in overtime to give Davidson a 13-12 victory over Virginia Tech in women's lacrosse in Blacksburg.

Kim Shuey led the way for the Wildcats (7-2) with four goals, and Hogan and Snyder finished with three each. Amy Mantooth scored five goals and Alice Matos had four for Tech (1-5).

Virginia Tech's women's basketball team capped a successful season with its annual awards banquet Sunday. Senior center Jenny Root was chosen the team's best offensive player for averaging 16.5 points per game, guard Lisa Leftwich was voted the best defensive player, forward Christi Osborne won the academic achievement award and Stacy Brown earned the most improved player award.

Radford University gymnast Christie Epperly set a school record for best postseason score in the all-around competition with a 37.425 at the NCAA Southeast Regionals held in Towson, Md.

Epperly, a former Cave Spring standout making her third consecutive trip to the Southeast Regionals, had a season average of 37.46 which seeded her sixth among all at-large competitors. Her all-around score placed her 16th overall and sixth among at-large competitors. Epperly's previous trips included a finish of 37.4 on the all-around in 1993 and an all-around score of 36.925 in 1994.

Ken Gonsalves won the expert men division and Carol Waters won the expert women division of The Trek Dragon's Back mountain bike race Sunday in Catawba.

The race was part of the All Sport/East Coasters Virginia Championships Mountain Bike Series as 254 riders from all over the state participated. The race itself features a 1,500 foot climb up North Mountain which covered about 1 1/4 miles and riders in the expert men's and women's divisions climbed it twice.

Other winners in the event included: Michael Carpenter and Sheila Eaheart in the sport men and women division; Fred Withers in the veteran men division; Josh Tunick in the junior men division; and John Skinner and Amanda West in the beginner men and women divisions.
