The Avalanche earned a split of its season-opening series at Prince William on Sunday as four Salem pitchers combined for a 5-0 shutout victory over the Cannons. Salem rebounded from Saturday's no-hit defeat and lost 10-0 in the season opener Thursday.
But the Avalanche's bats were working Sunday as Edgard Velasquez led a 12-hit attack with three singles.
Brian Culp may have had Salem's biggest hit. His two-run single in the sixth inning gave the Avalanche a 3-0 lead. Culp and Jason Smith each drove in two runs for Salem. Smith's two-out triple in the fourth inning scored Forry Wells with the only run the Avalanche's pitchers would need.
Scott Larock pitched 2 1/3 innings of one-hit relief to earn his first victory of the season. But relievers Jeff Sobkoviak and Barry Goldman had to get the Avalanche out of jams in the final two innings.
Sobkoviak got out of a bases-loaded, two-out jam in the eighth inning, and Goldman recorded the final out of the game with runners on second and third.
Starter Keith Barnes held the Cannons to three hits in 4 2/3 innings. Prince William had eight hits, but stranded 11 runners.
