Insurance counselors

Training will be held in May and June for persons interested in volunteering in The Virginia Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Project. Volunteers provide health insurance counseling to persons 60 and older, assisting them with Medicare and Medicaid enrollment and decisions aobut Medicare supplement (Medigap) and long-term care insurance policies. Runner's clinic

A free runner's clinic is planned April 22 from 9 a.m. until noon at Healthsouth Rehabilitation enter of Roanoke on Postal Road off Virginia 419 in Roanoke County. At 9 a.m., Alli Gokeler, physical therapist, will speak on preventing, recognizing and managing running injuries. At 9:30, Rae West, certified massage therapist, will speak. Between 10 a.m. and noon, there will be concurrent sessions with a physical therapist, an athletic trainer and a massage therapist.

For women

Dr. Richard Eckert, an orthopedic surgeon, will speak on osteoporosis April 20 from 7-8:30 p.m. at the Fralin Center for Community Health Education on S. Jefferson Street. The program will include a free computerized osteoporosis risk assessment. For more information call 985-8190.

On April 25, Donna Tyson, a Roanoke native and a motivational speaker, will head the program at the 11th Annual Women's Forum to be held at Mill Mountain Theatre beginning at 6 p.m.. Tickets are $10 and pre-registration is required by calling 981-7641 or 1-800-422-8482. Desserts and coffee will be served from 6 to 7 with the program to begin at 7.

The Fralin center talk and the forum are sponsored by the Center for Women's Education of Community Hospital of Roanoke Valley.

Top nurse speaks

Geraldine Bednash, executive director of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing, will speak April 28 at 1 p.m. in McLeod Hall Auditorium, University of Virginia School of Nursing. Her topic will be "Nursing in the Changing World of Health Care Delivery."

MS Bike Tour

Blue Ridge Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is sponsoring the MS 150 Bike Tour June 10 and 11. The 150-mile ride through the Virginia countryside begins at Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville and winds to Longwood College in Farmville, where bikers and supports teams will spend the night. It ends at Stonewall Vineyards in Concord.

Cyclists raise money for the MS chapter by getting others to pledge money for each mile the participant completes. MS is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks a person's nervous system. Most people with MS are diagnosed between the ages of 20 and 40.

Relay for Life

The fourth annual Relay for Life, in which corporate and community groups run or walk for 24 hours to raise a minimum of $1,000 each for cancer research, will be held May 19 and 20 at Victory Stadium in Roanoke. Tai Chi for MS sufferers

The Blue Ridge chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society is sponsoring an introductory Tai Chi course beginning April 21 at St. John Lutheran Church on Brambleton Avenue Southwest. The course, to be taught by Lieven Verkruisen, will meet at 9:30 a.m. each Friday for eight weeks. The fee is $20 and tuition assistance and transportation are available.
