TECH GOLFERS IN THE CHASE FOR METRO TITLE

Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp shot a two-round total of 144 on Monday to take a one-shot lead over South Florida's Bjorn Flygare in the individual competition at the Metro Conference Golf Championship in Davidson, N.C.

Sharp's performance has the Hokies in the hunt for the team title. Tech is at 598, one shot behind leader Virginia Commonwealth.

Sharp fired a 69 in the first round and a 75 in the second round as both rounds were played on the first day of competition. Curtis Deal is in third place in the medalist chase, just two shots behind Sharp with a 146. David Havens fired a two-round total of 152 and is in 18th place while Sean Farrell is 22nd with a 156.

The final round is today.

In other sports in the region:

Georgia Southern fired a second-round, 4-under-par 284 to lead the Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship at Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.

The Eagles lead Marshall by 12 strokes. Defending team champion East Tennessee State is third with 597. VMI is 10th with 692.

Neil Gibson of Georgia Southern leads all individuals at 1-under-par 143. His teammate, Jamie MaGuire, is one stroke back. Matt Gulse (167) leads VMI golfers, followed by Scott Neville (174), Tony Sleime (175), Aaron Rygas (176) and Darren Kirby (189).

The North Roanoke AAU basketball team finished third in the 7th-grade division of the eight-team Converse Cage Classic completed Sunday in Louisville, Ky. The Roanoke team finished 2-1 in pool play, with wins over the Louisville All-Stars (48-44) and Indiana (59-48), and a loss to Lexington, Ky. (58-40).

John Michael Deeds was the leading scorer for Roanoke against Indiana (15) and Lexington (14), and Ed Miller had 12 points in the victory over Louisville.
