NEW RIVER VALLEY SENIOR OLYMPICS STARTS MONDAY

More than 80 senior athletes are registered to compete in the 1995 NEW RIVER VALLEY SENIOR OLYMPICS Monday through Wednesday. Among them are three national Senior Olympics medalists - all members of the Senior Athletes of Montgomery County - attempting to go the distance again this year: Katherine McKenzie, a gold medal winner in horseshoes; Louise Akers, a silver medalist runner, and Betty Gordon, who picked up a gold medal in archery. Here's the schedule:

Monday, 9 a.m., Blacksburg Municipal Golf Course (golf); 2 p.m., Triangle Lanes, N. Franklin Street, Christiansburg (bowling).

Tuesday, 9 a.m., Cox's Putt-a-Round, 3500 Prices Fork Road, Blacksburg (miniature golf); 1 p.m., Blacksburg Community Center, Patrick Henry Drive (cards and checkers).

Wednesday, 9 a.m., Blacksburg Community Center and Municipal Park, Patrick Henry Drive (field events).

Dotty Talbott, the 1991 Ms. National Senior Citizen, speaks Tuesday, noon, during lunch at the Blacksburg Community Center. Fitness guru Artie Levin, whose appearance is sponsored by the Radford Community Hospital Wellness Center, participates in the opening ceremonies for the field events Wednesday. The Seniorettes cheerleaders accompany the Senior Athletes of Montgomery County.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program of Montgomery County needs items for its YARD SALE April 21 at the former Angle's lot in downtown Christiansburg. They'll take furniture, pots and pans, appliances, jewelry, toys, clean clothing and other donations. For pickup, call the RSVP office, 382-5775. Items may be left at the RSVP office in the first floor of the Montgomery County Courthouse Annex, weekdays, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Proceeds help repair the air conditioner on the volunteers' van and cover newsletter mailing costs.

The New River Valley Agency on Aging processes SENIOR IDENTIFICATION CARDS during April at several sites in the New River Valley. Anyone 60 or older is eligible. Applicants need proof of age and Social Security number; a driver's license, birth certificate and Social Security card generally are OK.

The ID card has a picture, name, address, birth date and Social Security number. The agency requests a $1.50 donation to defray costs. For more information, call 980-7720 or 639-9677.

"Welfare: Out of Control" is the News and Views group's topic Thursday, 10-11 a.m., Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Montgomery County's director of social services, Dan Farris, speaks. A coffee social starts at 9:30 a.m. John Cain, 552-5621, moderates the program.

The American Association of Retired Persons, Blacksburg chapter, meets Tuesday, 11:30 a.m., Blacksburg Community Center. Blacksburg Town Manager Ron Secrist speaks on "Retire Blacksburg EXPO '95," June 8-11.

The American Association of Retired Persons, Radford chapter, meets for a potluck dinner April 19, 5 p.m., Radford Senior Center, 27 First St.

The American Association of Retired Persons, Pulaski chapter, meets April 20, 2 p.m., at the Pulaski Senior Center, 106 N. Washington Ave. 908-1000.

The "Senior Swing" is April 22, 1-4 p.m., Blacksburg Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. All seniors are welcome for an afternoon of music, dancing and socializing. Volunteers are needed to provide music tapes, refreshments, setup and pickup. Sponsored by the Blacksburg Senior Association and the Christiansburg Senior Center. PULASKI SENIOR CENTER, 106 N. Washington Ave. Tina Faiszt, 980-1000:

Coffee hour is Thursday, 9:30 a.m., which - not coincidentally - is the same time volunteers tie SHARE bags.

Jim Faiszt speaks Tuesday at the Round Table discussion and luncheon. It's $2 for lunch. Reservations end Monday, noon.

Travel to Greensboro, N.C., April 19. Transportation is $5 and leaves the center at 9 a.m. for a day of shopping at Four Seasons Mall.

April 25, travel to see Natural Bridge and the Wax Museum. Transportation leaves the center at 9 a.m., lunch is on your own at the Summer House Cafe. $15 includes transportation and admission.

The Dine 'Round Club meets April 26, 12:30 p.m., at the center to visit the new Main Street Station in Pulaski.

BLACKSBURG SENIOR PROGRAMS, Community Center, 725 Patrick Henry Drive. Joy Herbert, 961-1134:

Registration ends April 19 for the Historic Garden Week trip to Lexington April 25. Transportation leaves the center at 8 a.m., with lunch at 12:30 p.m. The van returns around 6 p.m. It's $4 for transportation, plus $10 for the tour and lunch is on your own at the Wilson Walker Restaurant.

The Dine Out Lunch Bunch meets April 26. The van leaves at 11:30 a.m. to dine at Alleghany Cafe, Radford. (Diners also may join the group at the restaurant, on Norwood Street.) Reservations by April 24.

Movie day is April 24, noon.

Sign up now for the Barter Theater trip to Abingdon to see "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" June 14. $27 includes transportation, lunch buffet and performance. Registration ends May 8. Transportation leaves the center at 10 a.m., lunch is at noon, the performance at 2 p.m., return by 6 p.m.

A cholesterol screening for ages 21 and older is today, 10-11 a.m. It's $7.

Friday, travel to Buffalo Mountain, Willis. Transportation is $4 for seniors and leaves the National Guard Armory, College and Depot streets, at 9 a.m. Lunch is on your own in Floyd.

Registration is open for a trip to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, Tenn., June 23-26. $245 includes double occupancy, Dollywood and other planned activities. $25 deposit is required.

Thursday, a cleanup day is set for 10 a.m. at the Pandapas Pond area, with a picnic lunch to follow.

April 19, the Christiansburg morning group works at SHARE in Pulaski at 10 a.m. and has lunch out; the afternoon group goes to SHARE at 1 p.m. and has lunch out.

Creative Writing class meets Wednesdays, 10 a.m., and is open to all.

Space is left on the Dollywood trip to Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, Tenn., April 21-23. $249 includes food, lodging and entertainment.

Jane Richmond of the New River Valley Agency on Aging's Senior Employment Program visits the center Tuesday, 2:30 p.m.

The nutrition program is Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Needs Assessment Survey: Forms from the New River Valley Agency on Aging are available in local senior centers and at the elderly nutrition site, Floyd Community Action building. The agency plans programs for seniors 60 and older in Floyd, Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski counties and Radford. Surveys give seniors a chance to say what they'd like to see.
