Members of the Pulaski Business Alliance, which is sponsoring the market, voted Tuesday to give $1 from each space rented to the center.
Alliance President Marlis Ryssel-Flynn suggested the donations and Flo Stevenson made the motion, which passed unanimously. "I think the Fine Arts Center is a very important part of our community and should not disappear," Stevenson said.
Michael Dowell, executive director of the center and a member of the Alliance, abstained from voting but thanked to the organization for its support afterward. "Hopefully, that sort of thing will help us in our solicitation to other organizations," he said.
The center serves about 16,000 people a year from throughout the New River Valley, he said. But individual memberships of support make up only 1.2 percent of the population. Support also comes from Pulaski County and the town of Pulaski.
The Alliance also agreed to buy six $10 trash cans for use in cleaning up after each Saturday market on the parking lot at the Pulaski County Administration Building. It will pay young people to do the cleaning up.
"I think employing those kids is a real good idea," said Alex Rygas. He said it will help teach them responsibility.
The Alliance is distributing fliers advertising the market. Each vendor space will rent for $5 and some 70 spaces are available. Further information is available from Fred Goad (674-5830 after 8:30 p.m.).
The other current Alliance project is a raffle for a trip to Myrtle Beach, S.C. Tickets are $1 each and are available from participating downtown merchants. The drawing is scheduled for May 6.
