HIGHLANDERS STIFLE HOKIES' RALLY, WIN 8-7

Kelly Dampeer smacked a three-run home run to erase a four-run Virginia Tech lead in the early innings and Radford held on in the later innings to edge the Hokies 8-7 in a baseball game at Radford.

The Highlanders (19-16) trailed 4-0 when the former Northside standout hit a homer in the third inning to key a rally against Tech starter Denny Wagner (3-1). Jeff Dean's solo home run tied the score and Radford took the lead in the fourth inning when third baseman Rob McCandless doubled in designated hitter Brian Elms.

Trailing 8-4 in the seventh inning, Virginia Tech (20-15) got a three-run homer from designated hitter Chris Frith, a native of Martinsville.

The Hokies threatened to score in the ninth when Kevin Baker, who was 3-for-5, reached on an error by Dampeer in the ninth and David Fitt singled to put another man on base but Travis Toms picked up his first save for Radford, striking out Frith and getting a ground-out from Kurt Kurilla to end the game.

Terry Rooney (4-0) got the win as he allowed three hits and one run in 4 1/3 innings of relief.

Pinpoint passing by quarterbacks Jim Druckenmiller and Cody Whipple highlighted Virginia Tech's third spring football scrimmage.

Druckenmiller completed 4-of-6 passes for 116 yards and connected on a 37-yard scoring strike to Bryan Still. Whipple, a redshirt sophomore, hit 8-of-10 passes for 147 yards and threw two touchdown passes - one for 42 yards to Jermaine Holmes and another for 14 yards to former Salem standout Shaine Miles.

Tony Morrison was the leading defensive player with six unassisted tackles. Jim Baron recorded three unassisted tackles while also getting a quarterback sack and recovering a fumble. The Hokies will complete spring practice with the annual Maroon-Orange game at 7 p.m. on April 22 at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg.

Bridgewater's Corey Heinbaugh went 4-for-5 including a double and a grand slam to lead the Eagles to a 9-7 Old Dominion Athletic Conference baseball victory over Washington and Lee in Bridgewater.

Heinbaugh singled in his first at-bat, then doubled in two runs in the third inning before smacking a grand slam in the fourth to lead the Eagles (17-8 overall, 10-2 conference). The Generals (5-15, 2-8) roared back in the sixth inning, sending nine players to the plate and scoring five runs on five hits. Graig Fantuzzi looked to have the tying run, but was called out on a disputed call at the plate.

Virginia Tech's Brian Sharp made a five-foot birdie putt on the first hole of sudden death to defeat Bjorn Flygare of South Florida and win the 1995 Metro Conference golf championship, the first Metro individual title ever for the Hokies. Sharp shot a 74 in the final round for a total score of 218 on the par-72, 7,050-yard River Run Country Club in Davidson, N.C., to win his fourth collegiate tournament. Sharp's 12-foot putt for birdie on the 18th hole of regulation forced the playoff.

Sharp was selected to the All-Metro team for the fourth consecutive year, something not even PGA stars Paul Azinger and Jeff Sluman were unable to do at Florida State, along with teammate Curtis Deal, who finished third at 221.

Virginia Commonwealth won the team title with a final score of 900. UNC-Charlotte was four shots back and the Hokies were third, also at 904, after a tie-breaker using the fifth man's score from each team.

Greg Traynor scored five goals and Michael Watson had four goals and an assist as Virginia routed VMI 28-6 in a men's lacrosse game in Lexington. The second-ranked Cavaliers (9-1) scored their first goal 35 seconds into the contest and would add 13 more before halftime to take control of the game. Rob Worrell had two goals and an assist to lead VMI (6-3).

Kirsten Wagner and Ali Ogelsby scored five goals to lift Roanoke College to a 14-4 victory over Bridgewater in an ODAC women's lacrosse game. The win was the sixth in a row for the Maroons (8-2, 5-0), who are ranked No.8 in Division III and travel to top-ranked Trenton State on Saturday. Bridgewater is 5-7, 3-3.

At Sweet Briar, Nicole Ripken, Cinnie Logan and Lindsay Coleman scored three goals and Brooke Glenn made 12 saves as Washington and Lee beat Sweet Briar 17-4 in an ODAC women's lacrosse match. The Generals are 7-3, 5-1. The Vixens are 3-5, 1-3

Amy Mantooth had six goals for Virginia Tech, but the Hokies lost 13-10 to American in a women's lacrosse game at Blacksburg. Tech is 1-6, American is 2-8.

Will Huntley of North Carolina State shot a final-round 73 to win the individual competition at the Liberty University/Water's Edge Intercollegiate Golf Tournament held at the Water's Edge Golf and Country Club in Penhook.

Huntley's performance led the Wolfpack's junior varsity team to the team championship with a final score of 900. Winthrop was second with 911 and Methodist finished third at 913. Radford finished seventh at 935 and Virginia's junior varsity team finished ninth.

University of Virginia head football coach George Welsh has announced that offensive tackle Jason Augustino, quarterback Mike Groh, and linebacker Skeet Jones will be captains for the 1995 season.

All three players are rising redshirt seniors and were selected by a vote of their teammates. Augustino started all 11 games last season and has lettered twice. Groh moved into the starting lineup midway through the season and led the Atlantic Coast Conference in passing efficiency. Groh set a school record by completing 63.9 percent of his passes last season and was named outstanding offensive player in the Cavaliers' Independence Bowl win over Texas Christian. Jones has played in 35 consecutive games and was in on a career-high 31 tackles last season in a reserve role.

The Cavaliers open up the 1995 season against Michigan in the Pigskin Classic on Aug.26 in Ann Arbor, Mich.

The Big South tennis tournament starts today at Radford University's Dedmon Center Tennis Complex.

Winthrop, which finished 6-0 in the conference, is favored in the women's field. UNC Greensboro is the leading contender among the men's teams after rolling to an 8-0 conference record. Radford is seeded fourth in both tournaments after finishing at 4-4 in men's competition and 4-3 in women's play.

The tournament will be decided in match-play, a team versus team format. Some tournament matches will be played at Radford High School. The championship is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at the Dedmon Center Complex and admission is free.

Virginia Tech has rescinded a proposed parking fee for home football games. The athletic department had announced in January a $5 parking fee would begin during the 1995 season.

There will be considerable construction on athletic facilities and a possible road realignment over the next few years. Athletic director David Braine said that a parking fee would not be fair to football fans during those disruptions. Reserved parking for various patron levels will continue as before.
