BRINGING HOME THE BACON

George Allen pledged to produce 125,000 new jobs as Virginia's governor. These are the largest announcements of new or expanded plants since he took office:

United Parcel Service: announced March 15, 1995, 840 jobs, Newport News, $14 million investment.

Hill Refrigeration: announced May 1994, 500 jobs, Chesterfield County, $10 million investment.

Volvo GM Heavy Truck Corp.: expansion announced April 1994, 175 direct jobs plus 780 supplier jobs, Pulaski County, $200 million investment.

Hanover Direct Fulfillment Center: expansion announced January 1994, 700 jobs, Roanoke and Botetourt counties, $17 million.

Geico Corp.: expansion throughout 1994, 390 jobs, Stafford County, investment unknown.

Ericsson: expansion announced in March 1995, 440 jobs, Lynchburg, $35 million.

Ford Motor Co.: expansion announced October 1994, 400 jobs, Norfolk, $290 million investment.

These were the big ones that got away in the Allen administration:

Nucor Corp.: Nucor had considered building a $500 million steel mill in King William County. The mill would have employed about 600 people at an average salary of $55,000. In March, the company announced that it would locate in South Carolina.

The Walt Disney Co.: Disney's plans to create a historical theme park in Prince William County were scuttled in the face of stiff community opposition. It was projected that the park would have created 19,000 jobs.
