It was the third straight victory for Salem (4-2), which scored eight runs on eight hits and moved to a half-game behind first-place Winston-Salem in the South Division. The Warthogs were rained out Wednesday.
The Avalanche led 1-0 before the grand slam by Wells made it 5-0. They led 7-0 before Kinston (3-3) scored both of its runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Jason Smith's pinch-hit, lead-off home run in the sixth inning off Kinston reliever Roland De La Maza provided the final margin.
Salem catcher Mike Higgins had two hits, including a double, and scored one run. He is 5-for-7 in the past two games.
Matt Pool (1-1) earned the victory for the Avalanche, giving up four hits, two earned runs and one walk while striking out four. His six innings of work was the longest outing this season for a Salem starter.
