FIRST UNION MAY CLOSE 3 BRANCHES

First Union National Bank of Virginia confirmed Thursday it is considering closing three Roanoke Valley facilities and constructing a large-scale branch.

David Scanzoni, spokesman for First Union in Charlotte, N.C., said the bank is negotiating for a site for a super-branch that would be larger than the one that opened recently at Tanglewood Mall. He declined to disclose the location other than that it would be in the Roanoke Valley.

He said the bank is contacting community groups and customers about their reaction to closing three banks in Roanoke:

The branch on the upper level of Towers Shopping Center. He said the closing is under study because of the office's proximity to the South Roanoke branch on McClanahan Street. If the office closes, however, it would not affect the separate automated teller machine drive-through at another location on the mall property, which would remain in operation.

The office at 2657 Peters Creek Road near Cove Road, which is near both the Melrose and Hershberger branches.

The drive-through branch with an automated teller machine on Virginia 419 at Barnard Drive. The branch at the same site was moved several months ago to nearby Tanglewood Mall, where there are five drive-through lanes.

If the study supports the closings, Scanzoni said, they would take place later this year.

Scanzoni said no employees would be laid off if the facilities are closed. He said there is enough attrition among First Union's 2,200 area workers to absorb those employed at the branches. In addition, the bank expects to create new jobs and hire some new personnel soon because of its pending merger with Columbia First Bank of Arlington.
