SHOOTING TO GET A CLOSER LOOK

The U.S. Justice Department says it will investigate the slaying of an unarmed drug suspect by an Alexandria police officer.

Civil rights groups, expressing outrage Wednesday at the city prosecutor's decision not to file charges against the officer, asked for the Justice Department probe.

On March 16, Officer Scott D. Ogden, 31, who is white, shot drug suspect Otis Kelley 15 times in the front of the torso and in the back. Kelley, 33, who was black, sold crack cocaine and marijuana to an undercover police officer, tried to escape arrest and was shot after a brief foot chase, police said.
