BLANKENSHIP, Roy Monroe, 77, of the Clendennin Community in Narrows, died Wednesday evening, April 12, 1995, in Giles Memorial Hospital at Pearisburg, Va. Born in Bland County, Va. on February 2, 1918, he was a son of the late Fred Daniel and Oda Belle Wright Blankenship. A veteran of the U. S. Army in WWII, he was a member of the Giles American Legion Club and V F W at Narrows. He attended the Jesus Church of Clendennin. Surviving are his devoted wife, Geneva Hill Blankenship; four sons, Roy Monroe Blankenship Jr., Hiwassee, Daniel Miller Blankenship, Staffordsville, Douglas Leon Blankenship, Cleveland, Ohio, and Willard Mac Blankenship, Detroit, Michigan; eight grandchildren; two sisters, Florence Jacob, Raleigh, N. C. and Frankie Ramsey, True, W. Va. BYERS, Claude William, 81, of Buena Vista died Thursday, April 13, 1995, in a Roanoke hospital. He was born August 20, 1913 in Amherst County, son of the late James W. and Florence Stinnett Byers. He was a lifetime member of the Stone Church of the Brethren. He worked for the U.S. Forest Service for 16 years after retiring from James Lees. He was preceded in death by his wife, Daisy Sandidge Byers. He is surivived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Elaine Byers Shafer and Wayne M. Shafer of Roanoke, Mary Ellen and Lewis Plogger of Buena Vista; four sisters, Lillian B. Bradley and Annie B. Figgers both of Vesuvius, Essie B. Lanum and Odell B. Reynolds, both of Buena Vista; three brothers, A. Ray Byers of Richwoo d, W. Va., J. Carl Byers of Buena Vista, and Earl T. Byers of Forest City, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Thelma S. Patterson of Buena Vista; two beloved grandchildren, Jason William Shafer and Christopher Ryan Plogger. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Saturday at the Stone Church of the Bretheren, with the Reverend Terry Shumaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Rockbridge Memorial Gardens. He was the widower of Elizabeth Goodykoontz Lipes, a member of First Presbyterian Church, retired pharmacist and owner/operator of Lipes Pharmacy, a 60 year member of Pleasants Lodge #63 AF & AM and a member of the Scottish Rite Bodies. OLIVER, Dorothy Francis, 83, of Bedford, passed away Wednesday, April 12, 1995, in the Bedford County Memorial Hospital. She was born April 2, 1912 in Bedford County, a daughter of the late John H. Oliver and Kathryn Douglas Oliver. Dorothy spent her early years in Big Island where she graduated from high school. She attended Harrisonburg State Teachers College in Harrisonburg and upon completion, taught school for several years. She then went on to be employed by the U.S. Government where she was Supervisor of the Transcript Department. While with the U .S. Government, she lived in Philadelphia, Pa. Upon retirement she returned to Bedford to spend the remainder of her years. She was a member of the Bedford Baptist Church. She is survived by a sister, Vivian O. Perrow, Bedford; two nieces, Mrs. William Wells, Fredericksburg, Mrs. Otis Hall, Big Island; three nephews, C. R. Oliver Jr., Gary Oliver, both of Big Island, John Penn Oliver, Lynchburg. Funeral services will be conducted Friday, April 14, 1995, at 2 p.m. from the Updike Funeral Chapel, Bedford, by Dr. Charles Dorman and the Rev. Wessley Patterson. PORTER, Helen Harold, 68, of Roanoke, died Thursday, April 13, 1995, at Lewis Gale Hospital. She was the widow of J D Porter, retired Supervisor with Appalachian Power Company. Both were formally of Charleston, W. Va. She was a member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Dottie and David Perrin, Roanoke; daughter, Jan Dee Porter, Lexington; grandchildren, Kim, Sam and Angie Perrin all of Roanoke; sister, Dortha Harold, Charleston, W.Va.; sisters-in-law, Mabel Danford, Charleston, W.Va., Sara Simmons, Poca, W.Va.; brother-in-law, Felix Porter, Cross Lanes, W.Va. RAGSDALE, Guy Thomas, 79, of Blue Ridge, entered into eternal rest in the wee hours of the morning, Wednesday, April 12, 1995. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Ethel Ragsdale; three sisters, Mabel, Laura and Amaza. He was a member of the Blue Ridge Baptist Church where he served as usher and chairman of the Trustee Board until the Lord called him home. He kept the church lawn mowed until he became disabled. He will be remembered for his pleasant smile, faithfulness and willingness to help others. He was a member of the VFW Post 1444. One of his greatest joys was being a volunteer bringing joy to other disabled veterans at the VA Hospital in Salem, VA. During his long illness, he shared many happy hours with his only surviving sister, Georgia, who took pleasure in caring for him. Those also who cherish his memory are a host of cousins; a God child, Kiesha Preston; two friends, Stewart Wright and John Davis, who showed deep devotion for him. He will be sadly missed by all. Funeral services will be held Saturday 11 a.m. at Blue Ridge Baptist Church, with the Rev. Ottawa Pullens officiating, with burial in Saunders Cemetery, Blue Ridge. The family will receive friends Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. at Hamlar Curtis Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Missionary Society of the Blue Ridge Baptist Church, P. O. Box 223, Blue Ridge, Va. 24064. The remains will be placed in the church Saturday at 10 a.m.
