Bike race volunteers

BLACKSBURG - Volunteers for the Tour DuPont will meet today at 10:30 a.m. in town council chambers in the municipal building. All volunteers are invited to attend or send a representative. Volunteers are needed to be course marshals, operational support and team support, and you can sign up at today's meeting. Recycling information

BLACKSBURG - Information on starting or operating a recycling program will be available at an information meeting sponsored by the Blacksburg Recycling Office Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. at the Blacksburg Transit office on Commerce Street.

Local businesses will present cost analysis information on their recycling, and information on markets for recycled goods will be available. Call Kathy Carmichael at 961-1851.

Drinker's checkup

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's Psychological Services Center is offering Drinker's Checkup, a confidential assessment of alcohol use. It is not a treatment program, but a method of finding out more about alcohol use. Call the center at 231-6914 or Robert Stephens at 231-6304.

`Stampede & Stroll'

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech's fifth annual "Stampede and Stroll" will be today, and all runners, walkers, in-line skaters and dogs are invited.

A 5-kilometer road race starts at 8:30 a.m., a mile race for in-line skaters is at 9:45 a.m., and a mile dog walk is at 10 a.m. All races start on Smithfield Plantation Road near the Duck Pond, rain or shine. Prizes will be awarded for age categories in the 5K, and all participants receive a T-shirt.

The top two finishers in the dog race get prizes. Awards also will go to best owner-dog resemblance, biggest dog, smallest dog, most unusual dog and others. No female dogs in heat will be allowed, and all dogs must have proof of current rabies shots and a license. Dogs must be leashed at all times.

On-site registration is $10. Proceeds go to the Montgomery County Humane Society, the Roanoke Valley Therapeutic Riding Program and the veterinary school's classes of 1997 and 1998. Call 231-7911.
