DENNIS LOAN, Bath County
It didn't take long for Loan to decide the Chargers' game with Wellsville, N.Y. The first baseman hit two grand slams in the first inning to propel Bath County to a 24-2 victory. Those were Loan's only plate appearances, so his batting line was 2-2-2-8.
BRIAN STAGGS, Cave Spring
The Knights junior pushed his record to 4-1, pitching five innings of one-hit ball in a 20-0 victory over William Fleming. He then threw a four-hitter in a 10-2 victory over Patrick Henry. striking out four.
C.D. POLUMBO, William Byrd
The third baseman helped Terriers win a pair of games. Polumbo went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI as Byrd beat Lord Botetourt 8-3. He then homered again and went 3-for-4 as the Terriers outslugged Alleghany 11-9.
BRIAN ALLEY, Fieldale-Collinsville
Alley went 2-for-3, knocked in two runs and scored three. On the mound, he gave up only two earned runs and struck out five to earn the victory as the Cavaliers beat Tunstall 10-5.
GREGG REYNOLDS, MIKE PADGETT, Liberty
The Minutemen's All-Timesland football combination did the job in baseball, too. Padgett went 3-for-4 with two RBI, and Reynolds was 2-for-4 with four RBI and a homer in a 10-9 loss to Jefferson Forest.
RAYPHEAL MILTON, JOSH STEPHENS, Giles
These two each homered twice, combined for nine RBI and scored seven runs in a 22-5 rout of Auburn.
RICHARD BOOTH, Roanoke Valley Christian
Booth struck out 16 in beating Carlisle 10-6. On offense, he singled twice in four trips to the plate, raising his batting average this season to .579.
SOFTBALL
BLAIR CALVERT, North Cross
Calvert had two hits, including a triple, and three RBI while raising her batting average to .789 in a 7-6 victory over Roanoke Catholic. She also was the winning pitcher, striking out seven.
ERIN WEAVER, Northside
Weaver, a sophomore, had a tying triple and was the winning pitcher as the Vikings beat Salem 6-5. She then struck out eight and added two hits in a 6-5 loss to Alleghany.
WHITNEY CAMPBELL, Roanoke Catholic
The Celtics shortstop made 14 defensive plays in two games, a 7-6 loss to North Cross and a 10-3 victory over Roanoke Valley Christian. Against the Eagles, Campbell ended the game with a sliding catch of a fly ball just before it hit the ground.

GLENVAR'S DEFENDING STATE CHAMPS
The Group A Highlanders are off to a 3-1 start, with the only loss to Group AA William Byrd. Nick Varney, Josh Williamson and Tommy Lesperance, all key players in last year's big season, are 4-0 in singles.

KURT WILLIAMS, MARK DECKER, Blacksburg
Williams scored two goals in a pair of victories. The Indians beat Radford 5-0 and Christiansburg 4-0. Decker assisted on all the goals against the Blue Demons.
JIM BOB HARTLAGE, George Wythe
Hartlage had a goal and three assists in a 6-3 victory over Carroll County. In a 4-2 loss to Giles, Hartlage added another goal and two assists.
AIMEE BEIGHTOL, TIFFANY JACKSON, Cave Spring
Moving from basketball, Beightol scored four goals in an 11-0 victory over Martinsville. Jackson scored both goals in a key Roanoke Valley District victory over Patrick Henry.

CAVE SPRING BASEBALL
The Knights had 14 home runs in eight games through Thursday, hitting at least one per outing. First baseman Stan Burtis led Cave Spring with five homers and 23 RBI, and catcher Josh Salmon had four homers despite missing two games.
