COLEMAN SHINES IN SCRIMMAGE

The defense stole the show at the Virginia Tech football scrimmage held Saturday morning in Blacksburg.

Defensive end Hank Coleman led the charge with five tackles and three sacks for 21 yards in losses. Defensive tackle Waverly Jackson and linebacker Brandon Semones each had four tackles and a sack, and Torrian Gray chipped in with four tackles.

The best offensive play of the day was by former Salem standout Marcus Parker, who scored on a 79-yard touchdown run. Fullback Danny Edwards also scored on a four-yard run. Cody Whipple was the most effective quarterback for the Hokies, completing 13-of-17 passes for 145 yards. The Hokies will conclude spring practice next Saturday night at 7 p.m. with the annual Maroon-Orange game at Lane Stadium.

LACROSSE Maroons get record-setting win

Jeff Jones scored four goals and two assists as Roanoke set a school record for wins by beating Denison 18-8 in a non-conference game in Granville, Ohio.

The Maroons (12-2), the fifth-ranked team in Division III, also got three goals each from William Metz and Kevin Tersolo. J.J. Blatt and Dan Keating added two goals for Roanoke. Denison (7-4), the 12th-ranked team in Division III, was led by Tom Kavanaugh, who had two goals and an assist.

nEighth-ranked Franklin & Marshall built an eight-goal lead in the first half and held on for a 14-11 victory over sixth-ranked Washington and Lee in men's lacrosse in Lexington.

Generals goalie Doug Gubner gave up nine goals without making a save before he was replaced by freshman Scott Jackson.

Jon Bloom had four goals and an assist to lead the Diplomats (10-1). Ande Jenkins led W&L (8-3) with three goals and an assist.

Joe Brockman and David Belfiore scored five goals each as VMI overpowered Limestone 24-7 in a men's lacrosse matchup in Lexington.

Brockman added three assists and Belfiore had two for the Keydets (7-3). Limestone is 6-3.

Jen Mazzucco scored seven goals and had two assists as Trenton State won its 65th straight game, defeating Roanoke 23-5 in a non-conference women's lacrosse game in Trenton, N.J.

Susan Brown and Gayle Avery scored two goals each to lead Roanoke (8-3). Trenton State is now 8-0.

Michael Watson and David Jones scored three goals each to lead Virginia past Duke 15-13 in an ACC men's lacrosse game in Durham, N.C. The Cavaliers (10-1 overall, 3-0 conference) scored two goals with 32 seconds of each other to begin the fourth quarter and held Duke (9-3, 0-3) to just one fourth-quarter goal.

ETC. Mayhew leads Ferrum to victory

Ferrum's Keith Mayhew set a school record for victories in a season with his 10th as the Panthers edged visiting Greensboro College 3-2 in a Dixie Conference baseball game.

Mayhew (10-1) gave up five hits, struck out 10 and walked five to surpass the mark shared by a number of players including teammate Jimmy Hamilton. Jason Wilson's two-run double was the big hit for the Panthers (27-7, 6-4). Greensboro's record slipped to 18-14, 4-6.

The Ferrum women's tennis team finished in a three-way tie with Greensboro and Methodist for third in the team competition at the Dixie Conference women's tournament held at Greensboro College in Greensboro, N.C.

Averett won the tournament with 42 points, just edging out second-place Christopher Newport with 38. Ferrum, Greensboro, and Methodist each had 12 points. Shenandoah finished last with six points.

In the singles finals, Ferrum's Cindy Jancso lost 6-2, 6-0 to Amy Cross of Averett in the No. 4 singles final. Marlo Ferguson-Jamison of Ferrum also lost in the No. 6 singles final, 6-0, 6-3, to Amy Walter of Christopher Newport.

Virginia Tech scored three runs in the late innings to post a 5-2 win over Virginia Commonwealth and gain a split with the Rams in Metro Conference baseball action in Richmond. The Hokies lost the first game 6-5.

The Hokies (22-16, 4-4) broke a 2-2 tie in the sixth inning when former William Byrd standout Matt Reynolds, who led off the inning with a single, scored from second to give the Hokies a 3-2 lead after Rams' left fielder Christian Conte mishandled a ground ball. Bo Durkac gave Tech some breathing room when he led off the seventh inning with a solo home run and Mike Terhune scored on a two-out single by David Fitt later in the inning to seal the win. Sean Hummel (4-1) pitched a complete game to pick up the win.

In the first game, the Hokies led 5-4 before the Rams (16-26, 3-8) tied the score with a run in the eighth inning and then won it in the ninth on back-to-back singles by Jay Ashcraft, Brandon Snead, and Wayne Spencer. Rams starter Peyton Martin held the Hokies hitless until the fifth inning when but Kevin Kurilla broke through with a two-out double and scored on a single by Reynolds. Tech took the lead by scoring four runs in the sixth, including a two-RBI double by Josh Herman, another Byrd product.

Pitching and big innings helped The Citadel sweep a Southern Conference doubleheader over VMI 3-2 and 7-4 at College Park in Charleston, S.C.

In the first game, The Citadel (18-17, 15-5) jumped out to a 1-0 lead when David Beckley, who led off the inning with a triple, scored on Garrick Haltiwanger's two-out, RBI single. The Bulldogs extended that lead to 3-0 in the fourth on Curt Beerman's RBI single and Haltiwanger's steal of home on a double steal. The Keydets (15-23, 8-12) put two runs on the board in the eighth, but Donald Morillo closed the door to pick up his eighth save of the season. Britt Reames (7-2) went 71/3 innings to pick up the win. Ryan Glynn (4-4) took the loss.

The Bulldogs used a three-run second inning and a four-run fourth inning to take control of the second game as The Citadel bolted out to a 7-1 lead. VMI closed to 7-4 with a three-run sixth, but could get no closer. Glynn had two hits and two RBI to lead the Keydets.

Ferrum's Julie Shifflett was named to the All-Dixie Conference softball first team and also was an all-tournament choice as the Panthers were eliminated with an 8-7 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan in the consolation bracket. Ferrum catcher Betsy Forbes, first baseman Shannon Jost, second baseman Audra Freeman and pitcher Roben Sutphin were second-team All-Dixie choices.

The Radford University men's and women's tennis teams both fell in semifinal matches at the Big South Conference Tennis Tournament held at the Dedmon Center Tennis Complex in Radford.

The men fell to UNC Greensboro 5-2 and the women lost to Winthrop 5-2. The women's team bounced back for a third-place finish after beating UNC Greensboro 5-2, but the men faltered in the third-place match, losing to Winthrop 4-3. UNC Greensboro won the men's championship, while Winthrop won the women's title.

Shawn Webb and David Brock, two members of the Virginia Tech Boxing Club, won championships during the Virginia State Golden Gloves Championships at Arlington. Webb won the 165-pound novice division for the second straight year. Brock won the 125-pound novice title.

Three Roanoke College women's track athletes set individual school records during the Liberty University Invitational at Lynchburg. Renae Rose set records in the 100 meters (13.23 seconds) and 200 meters (:26.6). Britt Carlson set a record in the 100-meter hurdles (16.6) and Jaime Leddy set the mark in the 400 hurdles (1:09). Rose, Carlson, Leddy and Amy Beck set a record in the 400 relay (53:18).
