NO-HITTER FOR RADFORD'S ANDERSON

THE EX-GLENVAR STAR beats UNC Asheville 6-0 in a seven-inning masterpiece.

Radford University's Jason Anderson pitched a no-hitter in a 6-0 victory over North Carolina-Asheville in the second game of a Big South Conference baseball doubleheader Saturday.

Anderson (3-4), a freshman left-hander from Glenvar High School, entered the game with a 7.78 earned run average, but he stymied the Bulldogs by striking out six, walking four and picking off two runners. The no-hitter came in his seventh collegiate start.

``At the beginning of the game, I didn't think I had too much on the ball,'' Anderson said. ``I was hitting my spots and the ball was breaking where I wanted it to.''

Radford (21-16 overall, 8-3 conference) won the first game 16-11 behind a 17-hit attack.

UNC Asheville (9-24, 0-11) threatened to break up Anderson's no-hitter in the fifth inning when Patrick Jenkins hit a deep drive that Radford center fielder Donnie Fields dropped. Fields was charged with an error on the play.

In the seventh, Anderson issued a leadoff walk to Eric McLaughlin but immediately picked him off first. He retired Eric Filipek on a flyout, and ended the game by striking out Eddie Bauer.

Anderson's no-hitter was the third in Radford's 10-year baseball history and the school's first complete-game shutout no-hitter.

In the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, former Northside High School standout Kelly Dampeer was 3-for-4 with a home run, double, four RBI and four runs scored and first baseman Jeff Dean was 5-for-5 with a home run and four RBI.
