TOUR DUPONT? NAH. TOUR DE TECH

As the Town of Blacksburg completes last-minute preparations for the Tour DuPont's Stage 4 finish April 30, Montgomery County students from kindergarten to 12th grade will visit Virginia Tech's Center for Intelligent Material Systems and Structures' TOUR DE TECH 1995.

This year's expo, April 27 and 28, promotes understanding and awareness of the diversity of science and engineering, with a focus on fitness, competition and sports technology.

Richard Klein of the University of Illinois will demonstrate the stable single track trailer, a bike that is able to steer, balance and follow another bike on its own. Other items in the demonstration are night-vision goggles, a made-from-scratch all-terrain vehicle and a solar car.

The expo's hours are 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. and 6-9 p.m. April 27, and 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. April 28.

The tour also includes a family bicycle rally, a 10-15 mile and a one-two mile bicycle ride and a series of runs for children April 29. The activities begin at 10 a.m. at the Virginia Tech commuter parking lot on Prices Fork Road.

The Mental Health Association of the New River Valley and the Parent Resource Center of Montgomery County Public Schools will co-sponsor a workshop on childhood depression for parents, teachers and fifth- to eighth-grade students May 2, 7 p.m., at Christiansburg Primary School.

Are you considering earning a few extra bucks mowing lawns this summer? The Montgomery County Cooperative Extension and the agriculture department at Blacksburg Middle School will offer the LAWN MOWER RODEO program today, Wednesday and Thursday, 3-5 p.m. at BMS.

The program teaches lawn mower safety, operation and maintenance to sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. After completing the training session today or Wednesday, participants may test their skills at the lawn mower rodeo competition Thursday. Prizes will be awarded.

Students in the News

Auburn High School senior LORI LYONS placed second in the chemistry division at the Blue Ridge Highlands Regional Science Fair on April 1 at the New River Valley Fairgrounds in Dublin.

She won a $500 scholarship from Virginia Tech, a $50 savings bond from the American Association of University Women, Kodak's photographic award and a Naval Science Award.

Lori plans to begin her studies as a biochemistry major at Virginia Tech in the fall.

Auburn High School's ERIN BULL and STACY BOOTHE will represent their school at the 1995 World Affairs Conference, June 26-29, at Marymount University in Arlington. University professors, diplomats, government officials and high school students will gather at the conference to discuss U.S. foreign policy and international politics, economics and environmental concerns.

Erin will also study law and society at the Washington and Lee University Summer Scholars Program July 2-26.

Two Christiansburg High School students, SARAH EVANS and JAMES DICKENSON, will attend Virginia's 1995 Summer Governor's School at the University of Richmond. Sarah will study humanities; James will take part in the instrumental music program.

JILL DINGUS, JULIE GUNTER, DAVINA IRVIN, FARRAH ROYAL and KRISTEN SIMMONS of Christiansburg High School were recently inducted in to the State Distributive Educational Clubs of America Honor Society.

Student Shows

The BLACKSBURG HIGH SCHOOL MADRIGALS will sing in a joint performance with the Hylton High School Choir and the Virginia Tech Meistersingers, Thursday, 8 p.m., in the recital salon of Squires Student Center.

Admission is free.

Christiansburg High School students will bring the roaring '20s to life with their production of ``THE BOYFRIEND,'' Friday and Saturday, 8 p.m., and Sunday 3 p.m. in the school auditorium.

Tickets, available at the door, are $3.

Christiansburg Primary School second- and third-graders will present ``UNDER THE RAINBOW'' and ``THE TREE IN THE WOOD,'' two musical plays written for the pupils by Kathryn Garland Obenshain, professor of music at Radford University, Monday, 7 p.m. at the school's regular Parent-Teacher Association meeting. The public is welcome.

Radford High School and Dalton Intermediate School will hold an ACADEMIC TALENT SHOWCASE, April 25, 7-8 p.m., in the Radford High School Library. Students, parents and the public are welcome.

School Events

Sup on spaghetti with Virginia Tech athletes at Eastern Elementary School's SPAGHETTI DINNER, today, 5-8 p.m., at the school. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children under 12.

Have your picture taken with an athlete for $2.

Proceeds from the dinner will benefit the seventh-grade class trip.

Tippy Canoe the Clown, McGruff, Spot the fire dog and some crash dummies will be at the KIPPS SUPER SPRING CARNIVAL, Saturday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Games and activities include the Whopper Hopper, sack races, balloon darts, face painting, miniature golf, a cake walk and a silent auction. Riner Elementary School's combination YARD, CRAFT AND BAKE SALE and car wash will be held Saturday, 8 a.m.- 3 p.m. at the school.

The rain date is April 29.

Proceeds will be used for technology upgrades, educational programs, library books and classroom equipment.

The Bethel Elementary Parent-Teacher Association's GIGANTIC YARD SALE is set for Saturday, 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Vending spaces are still available for $10 each. For more information, stop by the school or call 633-3215.
