The Stars, who qualified for the national tournament July 15-22 in Winston-Salem, N.C., were paced in scoring by William Fleming stars Keath Hampton (24 points), James Stokes (19) and Sterling Tate (15). William Byrd`s Chris Childress, the Blue Ridge District's player of the year, added 12 points.
Rodney Cundiff has won the first weekly Curtis Turner Memorial Hard-Charger Award, which was presented Saturday night at New River Valley Speedway.
The Boones Mill driver earned the honor after improving seven positions in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late Model Stock Car race April 8. Cundiff qualified his Ford in 15th position and finished eighth. He beat out 25 other drivers who started the race.
The weekly award goes to the LMSC driver who best exemplies the late Hall of Fame driver from Floyd. The winner is selected by a special five-member committee following each race. An annual winner is named at the end of the season from the list of weekly winners.
