Dudley graduated from Roanoke College and the University of Virginia Law School. He practiced law in Roanoke from 1937 until 1942, when he volunteered for service in the U.S. Navy.
He was named to Roanoke College's board in 1972. Dudley became chairman 10 years later. In 1983, he was named to the UVa Board of Visitors.
Dudley was elected to the board of First and Merchants National Bank in 1970. He later served on the board of Sovran National Bank, as well as other corporations' boards.
Dudley, a lieutenant commander, continued his affiliation with the military for many years after leaving the Navy, and became a prominent attorney in the Washington area.
When an explosion aboard his yacht in 1949 killed an army general and a retired naval officer, Dudley went into the water to rescue others.
In 1946, Dudley served as head of the Foreign Liquidation Commission and the American Council of Volunteer Agencies to survey available overseas war surplus and arrange its purchase by American charitable groups.
In the late 1950s, he was named by the secretary of defense to be president of the Defense Orientation Team, a group of businessmen who reviewed defense spending.
