DALES, Victoria Deel, 90, of Meadowview, formerly of Buchanan County, passed away Sunday, April 16, 1995, in Johnston Memorial Hospital, Abingdon, Va., following a short illness. Born in Buchanan County, she was a daughter of the late Henry and Ada Cook Deel. She was a lif e-long resident of Buchanan County prior to moving to Meadowview, Va., was a member of Big Prater Primitive Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Mrs. Dales was preceded in death by her husband, Edward R. Dales, January 15, 1977. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Lorraine Wysor, Meadowview, Mrs. Helen Owens, Roanoke; one son, William H. Dales, Roanoke; one sister, Eunice Fletcher, Rt. 1, Grundy. She is also survived by ten grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by five sisters and two brothers. Funeral services for Victoria Deel Dales will be conducted Thursday, April 20, 1995, at 11 a.m. in the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel with Elder, Landon Colley, Elder Willard Owens, and Elder Ezra Davis Jr. officiating, with burial to follow in Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, Va. The body will remain at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel, where friends may call Wednesday evening at 6 p.m. Active pallbearers will be charles Wysor, Todd Dales, Steven Owens, P. J. Fletcher, Roger Fletcher, Gordon Deel, Henry Deel, and Tex Dales. Honorary pallbearers will be David O'Quinn, Virgil Vandyke, Buford Blankenship, Arnold Deel and Lonnie Bailey. There will be services at the funeral home chapel Wednesday at 8 p.m. by Evangelist Michael Trent and Tex Dales. Grundy Funeral Home of Grundy is in charge of all arrangements.

BAKER, Mary L., (""Ludie""), 54, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, April 15, 1995 at Tomey Hospital, Sumpter, S.C. She is the daughter of the late Wilkerson Brown and Estelle Brown. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Frank, Joseph, and Phillip Brown. She was an active member of Faith and Hope Ministries Church of God in Christ. She is survived by three sons, Robert A. Baker, Camp Spring, Md., Danny (Debra) Baker III, Forestville, Md., and Tyrone K. (Karen) Baker, Washington, D.C.; six daughters, Crystal O. McCadden, Angela E. Baker, Brenda L. Baker, Michelle C. Baker, Tarsha D. Baker, all of Roanoke, Tonia R. Baker, Washington, D.C.; twenty grandchildren; one son-in-law, Donald McCadden, Roanoke; one sister, Estelle D. BARTLEY, Polly Martin, of Salem, died Monday, April 17, 1995, in Richfield Nursing Home, Salem. Mrs. Bartley was a retired nurse from the Veteran's Medical Center, Salem where she worked for thirty-five years. She received her training at the University of Virginia School of Nursing in Abingdon. Born in Chilhowie, Smyth County, Virginia, Mrs. Bartley was the widow of Claude Irvin Bartley who was deceased in 1963. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Salem. Survivors include two sisters, Ruth M. Carter, Marion, and Kathryn M. Everett of the Brandon Oaks Lutheran Home in Roanoke; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Wednesday from the Williams Funeral Home Chapel, Chilhowie, with the Rev. Charles E. Blevins officia ting. Burial will be in the Saint James Lutheran Cemetery, Chilhowie. Pallbearers will be her nephews and great-nephews. CUMMINGS, Stanley Bert, 94, of Narrows, died Monday, April 17, 1995 in a Pearisburg, Va. hospital. He was born in Lexington, Ky., June 15, 1900, and was the son of the late Felix and Lelia Cummings. He was a charter member of the First Presbyterian Church in Narrows. He was retired from the Virginia Railroad and served in the U. S. Navy. He is survived by his wife, Ruby Evelyn Clark Cummings; two sons, George Lawson and Ted Lawson, both of Narrows; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, 1995, in the chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service, with the Rev. Harry Goodwin officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.

DAY, Mary Bryant, (""Cricket""), 87, of Radford, formerly of Independence, Va., passed away Monday, April 17, 1995 at Radford Community Hospital, Radford, Va. She was the widow of Wheeler Day, and was also preceded in death by a daughter, May Lee Day. Born April 28, 1907 in Grayson County, Va. to Haywood Cone and Agnes Peirce Bryant. She was of the Methodist Faith, and attended Oak Hill Academy, Mouth of Wilson. She was also a member of Order of The Eastern Star of Pulaski, Chapter #113. Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Tony Darden of Radford; three grandchildren, Kenneth Lee (Kem) Darden, Bette Bryant Beamer and husband, Preston, all of Radford, and Anthony Day Darden of Myrtle Beac h, S.C.; two great-grandchildren, Katherine Day Beamer, Mary Lee Beamer, both of Radford. A graveside service will be conducted Wednesday at 2:30 p.m. in Independence Cemetery, Independence, Va. Rev. Fred E. Jennings will officiate. The body is at Reins-Sturdivant Funeral Home, Independence where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Wednesday prior to service time. DUDLEY, Henry A. Sr., 82, a resident of Washington D.C., died Sunday, April 16, 1995 at Sibley Memorial Hospital of respiratory failure. He was a prominent attorney and former Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Roanoke College. Henry Dudley was born in Altavista, Virginia on April 28, 1913. He was a graduate of Fort Union Military Academy, of Roanoke College and of the Law School of the University of Virginia. Mr. Dudley began his law career in private practice in Roanoke, Virginia (1937-42) and during that time served as a clerk of the Virginia State Senate. After meritorious service as a Lt. Commander in the U.S. Navy during World War II where he participated in two amphibious landings in North Africa and Sicily, he became legal advisor and subsequently Commissioner of the Foreign Liquidation Commission for China and the Philippines. In 1947, Mr. Dudley returned to private practice in association with Paul V. McNutt, Former World War II Official, High Commissioner and subsequently the first U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines, and O.P. Easterwood with offices in Washington D.C. and New York. Upon retirement from McNutt, Dudley, Easterwood and Losch, he joined the law firm of Glassie, Pewitt, Dudley, Beebe and Shanks as Senior Counsel. Among his clients were Marjorie Merriweather Post and such corporations as Morrison Knudsen and American International Group. Mr. Dudley was active on the Boards of numerous educational, ci vic, and charitable organizations. Among these, he served as Vice Chairman of The Marjorie Merriweather Post Foundation of Washington D.C., a member of the Board of Visitors of the University of Virginia, President of the Defense Orientation Conference Association, Trustee of Landon School, and a member of the Boards of the Washington School of Ballet, the Oblate College, the National Symphony of Washington D.C., The Center of Strategic and International Studies, Foreign Policy Association, and the World Affairs Council of Washington D.C. He also served on a number of corporate boards including the Sovran National Bank, Meloy Laboratories, Inc., and Stone Industrial Corporation of Maryland. In 1965 he received the Meritorious Public Service Award of the District of Columbia for his work as Chairman of the Civil War Centennial Commission. Mr. Dudley was a member of the Chevy Chase Club, The George Town Club, The Army Navy Club, The International Club, MidOcean Club, Bermuda, The Commonwealth Club of Richmond, Va., and the Farmington Country Club of Charlottesville, Va. Mr. Dudley was married to Lavinia Ward Payne, deceased, and is survived by his sons Henry A. Dudley Jr. and Spottswood P. Dudley of the Washington D.C. area and four grandchildren. He is also survived by his nephew S. Cabell Dudley of Roanoke. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Roanoke College.

FIELDER, Evelyn Ridgeway, 75, of Roanoke, passed away Saturday, April 15, 1995, in a local nursing home. She was the widow of Albert Henry Fielder, and worked in sales of ladies apparel. Survivors include a niece and husband, Frances R. and William C. Yates of Vinton; two nephews, Brice K. Ridgeway and wife, Bettye Ridgeway of Hardy, and John Wilson of Roanoke; also a special cousin, Michael Chitwood of Roanoke and many other cousins. Funeral services will be conducted 10 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 1995, from the Lotz Vinton Chapel with the Rev. George E. Stevenson officiating. Burial will follow in Evergreen Burial Park. HARLOW, Warner M., 70, of Oriskany, died Saturday, April 15, 1995 in the V.A. Hospital in Salem. He is survived by his wife Ruby C. Harlow; four sons, Warner Harlow Jr., Rocky Mount, Larry Richard Harlow, Oriskany, William Wayne Howell, and Roger Lewis Spangle, both of New Castle; three daughters, Shirley H. Wertz, Arcadia, Kathryn Louise Musgrove, Rocky Mount, Patricia Ruth Furgerson, Vinton; one brother, James O. Harlow, Clifton Forge; two sisters, Helen Rogers, Baltimore, Md., Mary Ellen Linkenhoker, Clifton Forge; 10 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. IRBY, Eris Lee, 71, of Newport News, died Monday, April 17, 1995. She was a native of Roanoke and had been a Peninsula resident for over 40 years. Mrs. Irby retired from the Chamberlin Hotel as a comptroller in 1990 after 9 years of service. Survivors include two sons, Steven Lee Stump, Poquoson and Michael Lee Stump, Williamsburg; three sisters; and three grandchildren. KEITH, Dewey, 84, of Buchanan, died Sunday, April 16, 1995, at VA Medical Center. MUSE, Rev. Charlie M., 86, of Roanoke County, went to be with the Lord Monday, April 17, 1995. He was a retired Wesleyan Minister having served as an Evangelist and Pastor for 63 years. During that time he served churches in Cristo, Radford, Mineral and Waynesboro. He was a member of Emmanuel Wesleyan Church for the past 21 years. Surviving are his wife of nearly 60 years, Rosa Rachel Leonard Muse; a son and daughter-in-law, Paul T. Sr. and Virginia Muse; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Muse and Alvah W. Arthur, all of Roanoke County; five grandchildren and spouses, Susan and Bill Stull, Paul T. Muse Jr., Wayland Arthur, Jeffery and Bernice Arthur, Brian and Kim Arthur; five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. NICELY, Salenah Isabell Knick, 97, of Lexington, passed away Sunday, April 16, 1995 at the Heritage Hall Nursing Home. Mrs. Nicely was born March 9, 1898 in Rockbridge County a daughter of the late John Henry Knick and Lucinda Montgomery Knick. She was a member of the Lauderdale A.R.P. Church and the widow of Will Nicely. She was preceded in death by two sons, James Kenton Nicely and Billy Edward Nicely Sr. Surviving are two sons, Rosco Nicely, Blair Everett Nicely, both of Lexington; two daughters-in-law, Mrs. James K. (Lucille) Nicely, Mrs. Blair E. (June) Nicely, both of Lexington; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren. SCOTT, David Ranier, 41, of Lakeworth, Fla., died Sunday, April 16, 1995, in Jackson Memorial Hospital, Miami, Fla. Mr. Scott was born in Pearisburg, Virginia on October 31, 1953, and was a son of the late Alvie and Zulema Trout Scott. He is survived by one son, Timmy Scott, Blacksburg; two brothers, Michael Scott, Dallas, N.C., Richard Alan Scott, Dallas, N.C. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday, in the Givens Funeral Chapel, Pearisburg, with the Rev. Carl Rouintree officiating with interment in Birchlawn Burial Park, Pearisburg. SILVER, Mary Elizabeth Shank, 74, of Vinton, died Sunday, April 16, 1995. She was the widow of James T. Silver and was retired from Lewis Gale Hospital. She was a member of Thrasher Memorial United Methodist Church. Surviving are her daughters and sons-in-law, Carolyn Elizabeth and John Peters, Vinton, Jeanne Ann and Kynn Abbott, Stewartsville; grandchildren, Michael J. and Cheryl Pohlman, Christie E. and Michael Martin, Cara E. Pohlman, Megan B. Abbott, Nathan R. Abbott; great-grandson, Michael Alexander (Alex) Pohlman. SMITH, James P., 77, of Roanoke, died Monday, April 17, 1995. He was an Army Veteran of WW II and retired from Hooker Furniture Co. He was preceded in death by his wife Vernie Robertson Smith in August 1994. Surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Patricia Smith, Bedford County; grandson, Jeffrey Smith, Roanoke; granddaughter, Kimberly Smith, Bedford County; a brother, Cletus Smith, Baltimore, Md.; sisters, Frances Sthuyler, of Md., and Viola Leonard, Roanoke. TUCKER, Troy Douglas, 77, of 5918 Edgewood Ave., of Lynchburg, died Monday, April 17, 1995 in Lynchburg General Hospital after a short illness. He was the husband of Mary Martin Tucker. Born in Brookneal, October 14, 1917, he was a son of the late Frank Clyde Tucker and Senora Mason Tucker. Mr. Tucker was the owner/operator of Tucker Battery Warehouse in Lynchburg, a U.S. Air Force veteran and served during World War II and Korea and was a member of Heritage United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, J. Michael Tucker and Pamela Tucker of Forest; six daughters, Margaret France and her husband Roy of Forest, Elaine Powell and her husband Marion of Daleville, Gail Mayberry of Lynchburg, Dianne Wright and her husband Pete of Staunton, Janet Allen and her husband David of Millersville, Md., and Joanne Rash and Dennis Walker of Lynchburg; one brother, Winfred Tucker of Brookneal; one sister, Shirley Marshall of Halifax; 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Falling River Baptist Church in Brookneal with the Rev. Donald E. Carlton and the Rev. Elton McDowell officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with miltary honors by the American Legion Post 16. WEBSTER, Leona V., 81, of Roanoke, died Monday, April 17, 1995. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Miss Webster retired from Colonial American National Bank where she was a teller for many years. She is survived by her brothers, Fred O. (Tom) Webster, Otis H. (Whitey) Webster; nieces, Bonnie W. Mitchell and her husband, Buck, Debbie W. Equi and her husband, Charlie; nephew, O. Thomas Webster and his wife, Cindy; five grandnieces; three grandnephews, all of Roanoke.
